Is the loud bang every so often (not all the time) the pantograph? It's quite a loud bang and will get other passengers turning around wondering what the hell is going on. Happened 2/3 times over the chat moss line? I've never sat close or under the pantograph before in this class.

331 going to be doing ASDO testing in and out of Victoria early tomorrow morning. 3Z01 ex BPN then 3Z02/03/04 then 3Z05 back to BPN.
Should arrive at MCV on 3Z01 around 0200. Leaving MCV on 3Z05 around 0400.

Ah I see. Seems quite a noise - Surely would be better if it was a less loud. Not sure if CAF can do anything about that now though.

The bangs should come in pairs (power off, then on) with things like the aircon stopped between the two bangs.
If your phone is being charged it might bleep as the power comes back.
Generally happens around major junctions or wherever else there is a neutral section in the OHLE.

There's 3 neutral sections on the Chat Moss line, at the start (Edge Hill), middle (near Newton-le-Willows) and end (Eccles) of the line.

Just to confirm, as there’s been so many answers, the noise is a circuit breaker operating. It is in the vicinity of the pantograph, but the pantograph itself isn’t making the loud noise, because it normally stays raised and in contact at all times.

(However there are different noises caused by raising and lowering the pantograph if you are ever on a dual-voltage train at an AC/DC changeover, but that isn’t happening on this route.)

Can tell some staff members aren’t a fan of the new trains. On a service towards Liverpool that stops at Deangates. The guard has to get through a very packed train to a certain set of doors to be able to even open at the station. (not the doors at the far back) I assume this is something do with the length of the platform at Deansgate?

Surely this can be done better? The guard was apologising and saying some guy in Spain is laughing at us due to these difficulties.

But without globalisation, Bombardier wouldn’t’ve taken over the Derby factory, CAF wouldn’t’ve opened its UK factory, and Hitachi wouldn’t’ve opened its Newton Aycliffe factory.

To be fair, most of these factories were just built as part of winning the bidding process, so they can claim to be giving some jobs to the UK. It would probably be cheaper for CAF to produce sets in Spain and Hitachi to produce them in Japan. The factories will doubtlessly close once UK orders are fulfilled.

Bombardier seems to be the only one with some actual feet in the UK.

I'd still agree globalisation is a good thing, we get more train for less. (I refrained from saying better, bdcause that's probably more subjective...)

The EU fair bidding processes kind of put an end to choosing a manufacturer just because it supports UK jobs. If/when we leave we can go back to British workers mounting British bus bodies to British freight cars :p

Will these be 4 carriage sets, always find trains through Castlefield from Bolton way to be very overcrowded!

I'm not sure tbh, there was talk of 2x 3-car sets but that might be interesting at Hazel Grove on the Blackpools.

Yeah, Hazel Grove isn't perticularly long, then there's the siding it goes into for a little while.

The airport trains are the ones that need the most length I think, the current 319's get super overcrowded, especially on weekends!

Let's hope services currently booked for four car class 319's aren't replaced with 3-car Class 331 cause that would be a capacity reduction, I've seen some very busy Class 319's on the Blackpool line in recent times.

Yes, this is exactly my concern too! That or 3-car 323's. I wonder if splitting up some of the 3-car formations and having 4-cars either formed of two driving + two center cars or four driving cars, this applies for both the 323's and 331's. Ideally we need five cars on Blackpool/Bolton through Castlefield, or an increase in frequency, however considering the difficulties with the latter in the existing setup, longer trains are likely to be needed. What is for sure, a 3-car train is not nearly enough.

What would you do with the spare driving cars?

No, 6 carriages of 23m length are required, as was present and very highly utilised for many years before being downgraded to the current 4x20m carriages.
