I'm quite surprised about that news as, as far as I know, all the wickets at the MCG are of the "drop in" type.
I visited the ground in 2001, and our guide told us that the Rules footballers kept complaining about the different bounce on the outfield and the wicket. As there were far more Rules matches there that cricket matches, the dug up the square and used "drop in" tracks for every match. Granted, I don't know how long it takes to replace a "drop in" wicket, but could they not have changed the wicket rather than abandoning the match?
