Availing myself of LNR's very finest this evening, and enjoying a coach between two of us (on time, too) I was reminded of a curious sound you get in the unpowered driving trailers, a sort of intermittent low whining noise not totally dissimilar to the noise kids make with balloons by letting the air out. Does anyone know what it is?

Thanks.

Would you have a video of that please ?

Afraid not but if nobody else knows I'll record it next time I'm on one.

Thinking on, do they have air suspension like their cousins the Mk3 coach? Could be that perhaps? It's a sort of similar though lower-pitch sound.

Hazarding a guess it is the air supply mlvint around the air suspension and brake cylinders but without hearing it I couldn't be certain.

I think that I've raised this one before and noone satisfactorily answered it. You used to get it on mk3 sleepers as well, especially while stopped at Preston or Crewe.

It's a sort of soft and restful, creaky, squeaky up and down noise especially audible when stopped or at very low speeds. For example, a 319 crawling between Blackfriars and East Croydon via Herne Hill would do it just about all the way.

8J above comes up with a better idea than I've seen, maybe that's it?

I think I might know what you’re talking about. Is it some sort of quiet metallic whistle-like sound ?

I think I heard that once when I was travelling on a 319 round the Wimbledon loop during the southern strikes three years ago sitting in a driving carriage. If what you’re talking about is what I’m thinking of, the Class 455’s make the same kind of noise too in the DTSO’s

Yes - that's what I'm describing, but this is Bletchlyite's thread...
