As nobody seems to know the answer I don't mind you (or anyone else) reaping the rewards for your (their) "research". In the meantime here's a picture hint.
Gorgeous isn't it? If they still made cars like that I might take up driving again.

Wow, that is nice!

I'm not surprised that i didn't get it though, as I've never heard of them. I've been to a lot of car museums in the UK and some in Europe, but I've never seen one - and I'm sure that I would have remembered if I had, and I'd certainly have taken a photo! Do you know whether there's any in a museum in the UK, please?

I have heard the name but never seen one - if I am reading the website right, the Haynes Motor Museum near Yeovil has one - but check for yourself!

Thanks - I've looked and they do have one - and I remember taking photos there last year, so I must have an image of it! Mind you, I do follow the Japanese principle of photography … if it moves, take a photo of it - and if it doesn't, take a photo anyway, because it might!!

That's the one, your turn...

Another car question with a French connection..

What was the name and model of one of the first cars I drove?

The company itself ceased in 1931, however it was subject to a takeover but the marque continued.
Production ceased in 1981, the company name was not used again.
The company name is still owned by Peugeot, however the model name is owned by Chrysler and was used again.
It was sold around the world, in some countries re-badged.
It has won 3 British touring car championships and won Rallies.

The Chrysler Alpine springs to mind, but I can't imagine my grandfather driving a motor that won touring car championships! The name Alpine has been used in motor racing, I'm sure.

Close.

It has been re-badged as a Chrysler and a Talbot. Elsewhere a Dodge, Plymouth and even Volkswagen.
@EbbwJunction1 got a name right of one of the variants, but not the make/model I drove.
I'll settle for the model name.

Was it the Hillman Avenger, later rebadged as the Chrysler and Talbot Avenger? I recall there was a sporty model in the range. It was another car from the Rootes/PSA family that my grandfather owned, and my aunt had a later estate version.

I've just checked one of the suggestions above, and it's right - although i won't steal Trackman's thunder!

I knew that some part of my guess was right, but I just couldn't remember which part - and I certainly didn't think of the right one!

Is the correct answer!

It was in this colour, I broke the door once and remembering tying it up with string and mate held on to it as we went down the motorway as as we where about 50 miles away from home!

Having since checked Wiki, it advises that name was retained by Chrysler and most recently used on the Dodge Avenger.

I fondly remember my grandfather's Avenger which was one of a long line, starting with the Hillman Minx (2), and afterwards he went on to own a Chrysler Alpine, Talbot Samba, Peugeot 205 and finally a Peugeot 106. The only break from the Rootes/PSA stable was a 1970s Ford Consul.

Which leads me onto another motoring question: why was that car badged initially as the Consul rather than Granada?

Ford tended to use Consul for the less powerful. less luxurious and cheaper models of their large saloons hence Consul/Zephyr/Zodiac in Mk1 and 2 guises so I presume they wanted to differentiate the lower spec. 1970s Consul from the Granada in the same way.

It's something to do with Granada TV I think , however I do not know the ins and outs.
I'm guessing the original name for the Consul was 'Granada' but they objected, eventually something was sorted out. A bit like the Mini Metro.

Dale is right in that it was the lower spec models that we're branded as Consul, but Trackman is correct in that Granada TV were uneasy about the Granada name being used in case the car was flop. Do you wish to sort it out between you?

I concede the honour to Trackman.
