So for my trip in January I've now booked the outbound with....British Airways. I'll look for the rail return later (or maybe stay over and have a ton of options the day after).

As for my trip this coming Wednesday, will Avanti restpect the seat reservations we already have? If the do that means marking the seats - so in that case they could easily do the reservations themselves onwards.

Also presume if I'm lucky with seatfrog and get an upgrade, that will be unreserved so a mad scramble....??

At first glance there are no even remotely cheap advance fares for Chester - London on the site and it tells me that the services I want to book in less than a months time aren’t guaranteed to be running.

Rubbish start

There are trains back from £19.15 with seat selector available if you book with Trainsplit; this may be better than waiting for the Avanti website and not being able to pick a specific seat.

Absolutely.

What day/time are you travelling?

There is absolutely no reason to use Avanti's website to book tickets.

The same tickets and the same price are available at all accredited ticket selling websites (the only exception I can think of is the 'Saver Half' SVH fare which Webtis sites cannot sell)
Avanti has no seat selector and no plans to introduce one if reports are to be believed. Trainsplit and Trainscanbecheaper has a seat selector
Avanti has no loyalty scheme other than Nectar (which frankly isn't really worth it). Traveller is supposedly coming soon for people spending a shed load on 1st class fares but we can ignore that for almost everyone.

@Hadders I agree!
...(the only exception I can think of is the 'Saver Half' SVH fare which Webtis sites cannot sell)..
just to be clear, in case anyone isn't sure what this means, Trainline, Loco2, Trainsplit (and some others) can sell the Super Off Peak Single (online) code: SVH fares.

Sites that can't sell those include the WebTIS sites powered by Atos/Worldline (technically all online sites are Web Ticket Issuing Systems ;)) and various others.

Someone may have a full list of retailers/suppliers that can/can't offer these particular fares, but it is certainly true to say that not all retailers issue them.

lunch time when there is usually a good availability of cheapies
I don't know what sort of price you got before or what days you looked at, but choosing a random day in January I found a the 1235 direct train for £19.50 on 28/01, if that's any good?

They are offering a 500 Nectar point bonus during December for your first booking with Avanti after linking your Nectar card, so it might be worth booking one ticket with them 8-)
