Conductor job with Northern Rail

I am thinking of applying for a conductor/guard job with Northern Rail. The position is advertised as £15,000 pa for 3 months (training) then £20,000. I have heard though that this salary is shortly to be raised to £26,000 does anyone know if this is correct?

I know you need to have a BMI of 33 at most but preferably 28 for a trainee driver position, is it the same for a guard's role?

It is a 35hr average week, but is there scope for doing overtime?

I am also worried about the move towards DOO trains, so how secure would the job actually be?

I have applied for this post 13th March, but heard nothing since. Is Northern quite slow at replying?

try contacting them, I had the same problem when I applied for a fitters job at the heaton depot, think its due to the sheer amount of applications they must get

Thanks Geordie Liam

I emailed them a couple of days ago and they said that they are about to start the sift, and they thanked me for my patience!

Any further west and you would have wet feet.
Good luck guys. With regard to the BMI question, I am a former rugby player, 5ft 10 but with a 46 inch chest. I have a high BMI, but proportionately low waist size. This worried me so much that I went on a crash fitness regime in the weeks leading up to my medical and managed to reduce my BMI by 1. BUPA in Bristol, who conducted my medical, were quite happy with that. That was March 2008. Whether Northern is different to FGW in this respect, I don't know, but the BUPA team told me that waist size is more important when determining fitness for a safety critical role

Train companies will not reply to every application only those who continue to the next stage

Actually, Northern promise to reply to all applicants via email, even if they don't get to interview stage.

Thanks Max

That's what they told me when I rang them, as per my earlier post.

Good luck to them, 600 applicants for 2 drivers jobs at ATW that's a lot of emails, ATW did not reply to any that didn't reach the next stage, Northern must have a very busy HR department!

It's probably why they're a bit on the slow side. However, I think the response system is an 'automated' system, as it's all done through a rather snazzy online application system.

It has been about 6 weeks since I applied, but I can't remember the closing date. I also applied online to Virgin for a fixed term 6 month on-board CA and have heard nothing either, so applied to Scotrail as a conductor a day or two ago.

From what I have read on the forums TOCs are notorious at being quite slow and moving things on!

Albert ,

With Norhern i think it depends on how quickly they need to fill the positions. I applied for a conductors job at Liverpool and heard i had an interview within about ten days . So maybe the Carlisle posts aren't as urgent.

Hello Herdster

Yes, I think I posted something on that thread. How are things going? As I recall they did not want someone until later on in the year (or something). What part of the country are you in & how is the search going? PM me if you like.
