I needed to book three tickets (1 adult and 2 children) on a sleeper service from Paris to Briançon.

In somewhat of a rush, I decided on a bit of a whim to invent a third child (with name and date of birth!) to secure all 4 places in the couchette.

I've since learned that I could have done this more officially, and slightly cheaper, by booking espace privatif for €40 (I paid €42.50 for the phantom child).

Is there likely to be any problem on board?

Thanks in advance.

If the train is full, the conductor is at liberty to resale the berth not occupied. If you had booked espace privative then you would have been ok. You shouldn't have a problem but...

The way things are going in France, i doubt that you'll be going anywhere on a French train over the next few weeks or days...

Oh dear. It's not looking good if it carries on the way it is at the moment. No Intercités de Nuit, and no trains Paris <> Italy at all (which is how we are due to return, Oulx-Paris).

I assume Eurostar wouldn't allow free cancellation if they are running OK but my SNCF isn't? Tickets booked separately.

Chances of allowing me to switch to a Brussels or Amsterdam service (so I could then grab a flight to Turin, avoiding French airspace...)?

My missus had to change her Eurostar booking at a cost of £77 after SNCF cancelled the connecting service to Paris. Eurostar have told her that it is possible to get the £77 fee refunded if we fill out the requisite forms and has given us email and phone numbers to contact. I will give it a go over the weekend.

Thanks. Sounds like there might be some flexibility if I ask nicely.

Not at the moment. According to SNCF, 1 in 3 trains from Gare du Lyon are running but zero international or night trains.
  • Liaison France – Italie : aucun train
  • Intercités de nuit : aucun train
They've been cancelled every day of the last few that I've checked, although schedules only being release one day at a time.
