A 322 took me to Sandal & Agbrigg this afternoon. I can't remember seeing a 331 out on the Airedale and Wharfedale routes for a couple of weeks now, and the last one was struggling.

the 320-322 squadrons are no way near life expired yet, BREL built for a specified 40 + year life expectancy...the Roscos would be wise to wring every mile and day out of their vehicle and loco fleets until they become cheaper to scrap than overhaul .

If there is nowhere to use them they can only go for scrap.

Arguably the 321s cut the lives of the 305 / 307 / 308 fleets shorter than might otherwise have been the case. Always seemed a bit odd that the Eastern Region replacement fleet was built before the 'Kent Link' replacement fleet. I appreciate that each of these got a bit more use elsewhere but I'm not sure that was intended.

I guess the point was that a cascade was needed to eliminate the unrefurbished 302s on the London, Tilbury & Southend route and it made sense to keep building 321s to take out all the other late 1950s units, albeit that they were refurbished.

Well, 321903 disgraced itself this evening by failing on the approach to Leeds, blocking the line to the lowest numbered platforms and knocking out the Airedale, Wharfedale and Harrogate line service between about 4.30 and 6 this afternoon. Eventually rescued by a 322 which I think usually goes to Skipton.

Is it a major failure or something minor?

Combined with a failure at Keighley earlier this caused significant disruption throughout the peak

And that, folks, is why you might want to keep something in warm storage...

Only thing I can think of is 902 had an issue that would've required repair, and Northern opted to bring 901 back instead of repairing 902.
Unless they have agreed otherwise with Eversholt then they will still have to fix it before handing it back. The Northern 321/322 fleet is PRM modified so really ought to be being used after Northern finish with them - Anglia have a big fleet of non-compliant 321s for starters.

Have any 321/322s with Northern been scrapped or stopped passenger service? Do you still see them at Leeds or have they been completely replaced?

They are still very much going on Aire and Wharfe, probably more out than ever due to the current 333 issues.

There is just one 321 stepped down at present as mentioned. Still plenty of booked work for them on the Airedale/Wharfedale lines in the new timetable.

Yes they will, without doubt. Until all the 331s are available and all crews trained up they will continue to feature on the West Yorkshire EMU paths.

Are any diagrams booked as 321/322s? Or are they not assigned to diagrams like other Northern units?

All services are booked for specific traction on Northern. Whether you get the booked traction depends on maintenance requirements and unit displacement. The 321/322 fleet are all diagrammed as 321’s and there are still plenty of diagrams with them on for Airedale and Wharfedale line services for the new timetable.

I would assume the eight units have been (mostly) moved from the Doncaster-Leeds shuttle so that WY has more longer units? Every time I’ve passed through Doncaster in the last few weeks, I’ve seen a three car 331 in the bay platform.

All services on the Leeds - Donny Line (with the exception of the first and last departures from Donny which are diesel units) are booked for 4 car 331’s. No 3 car 331 (as far as I know) has been in service on the east side as of yet. In dire emergencies a 321 would substitute but that is rare now.

I thought it was only 4 car 331s on the Donny Leeds line too, the line only needs 2 units off peak and the units previously operating it were 4 cars too.

I thought that four car 331s weren’t coming to Yorkshire?

They're all 4 car 331/1's in Doncaster, there's been a lot of 2 & 3 car 195's around there recently though (06:06 to Lincoln was a 2-car 195 yesterday morning)

Is there another user planned for the 321s/322s?
I don't believe so yet, there's many places for them e.g. covering for 331s west of the Pennines or in the south but no user has been planned yet.
