Hi there

I have applied to Fratton Station -

The assessment is in Southampton

Oh ok so the test will consist of all shapes, numbers and symbols ? Is this per sub section ? I.e Symbols for section 1, numbers for section 2 etc or just random on the day ?

Thanks for the reply

Exactly the same as mine was. Numerical is maths, quite basic really. I'm no great shakes at maths but I found it easy. Just adding, minus, times table etc. CSS was 19 (yes 19) scenarios of customer service instances & what you would do.

Verbal communication=you listen to a radio message from a driver of a train that has hit a car on a level crossing. Speaking to railway control confirming the train code number what number signal it is at & explaining what has happened during the incident. You hear it twice & are allowed to take notes then you come back in individually & relay to the examiner what you heard. Bullet points only needed really not the driver's name or colour of the car it hit.

As said its in booklet. Numerical is very basic maths, when I did it it was like ? + 15 = 52 for example, you just fill the question marks for the entire test and it's addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. MiNi has described the tests well. With the verbal communication try to take as many notes as possible so you have the key details. Most people who got sent home after the first round failed the verbal communication because they didn't give enough info so be thorough.

Totally agree with jaMa9. A lady got through to the verbal test but failed in the end. As she quoted the train driver's name, the colour & make of the car which was not really what they wanted. The train reporting code, position of the train, signal number you are phoning from & damage to the train are more relevant.

Ok thank you all for the info very helpful ! So taking the most important and as many notes as possible is key here

Is the verbal very fast or quite easy to take notes from ?

Do you recall how many questions were in the maths test at all roughly ?

How were the CSS and Rules and regs tests ?

I hope you both did well in the tests ?

Thanks again for the feedback

Much appreciated

Big day tomorrow

Verbal test as I said you hear it twice,so there is enough time for notes. Remember 'Bullet points' not nicestys.
Maths test can't remember how many but I didn't do them all & passed ok.
CSS test everybody in our group passed,I think the examiner allows that everyone has a different expectation of customer service. Rules & regs was fine also as there is a passage to read which gives you the answers. Again I didn't do them all but passed ok

As you are going for commercial guard not just guard, you have the delight of a 6th test. As is ticket selling & checking test. This is the last test of the day & I found it difficult & at the end of a long day.!!!
This was the worst test for me.

Ahaha

Sounds like a long day !

I will look forward to that delight then !

So the ticket and selling test are pretty much like the study material they send you with the train on the left always travelling down etc ?

Are there any tips you would give that you wish you had thought of before you took the assessment ?

Thanks again for that - Very helpful again

Much appreciated

Friend of mine did the SWR assessment day for commercial guard 2 weeks ago. She passed and then they sat down with everyone that passed and they offered interview dates to them all. The interviews were for 2 days after the assessment and the following week ! She couldn't make those dates so hers is tomorrow :)

She said it was colour blindness test first, (1person failed !), then 3 written tests, they are marked and 6 failed then you do 2 more tests, 2 failed and the 4 left did the last test which is the ticket selling test.

After the different stages of the tests you all sit in a room together (tea coffee etc) and if they come in and call you name then its feedback time and goodbye.

Our group started with 16 people and I was one of 4 left. Started at 9.30 and this was 3.30 when we were left standing there.
Yes that is the ticket test that they send you. I was ok with the one they send you but on the day they added the different discounts & travelling times of the day. Which confused me no end.

Maths test just do as much as you can - I only did about 18 questions despite there being many more pages left in the book and still passed. So long as you get the answers right with what you do, you don't have to answer all the questions.

Its a long day but the tests themselves are not difficult so don't worry. I would say just take your time and don't rush through anything so you don't make any silly mistakes. Good luck.

Yeah thank you sounds like sound advice ! Just take your time indeed.

So SCAAT wise do you recall how far down you were getting per Section ?

I can do roughly half, third, quarter for the 3 sections any faster and i start making mistakes - Any good ?

This is via opt practise pack which i bought

Thanks again

I never bothered with the practice packs and was ok. By the looks of it you will be fine. I didn't think I would enjoy the day but found it good. Enjoy your day & good luck.
Keep us informed how you get on.

Out of interest, is there a reason why TM assessment doesn’t include all of these tests? I only had SCAAT and RAAT. NO MATHS/CS/Ticket checks etc?

Half an hour for lunch while they mark some tests. There are a few shops nearby for something to eat.
