Hi

Has anyone recently applied for Trainee Conductor with Northern?

I've just completed the two on line assessments. Just wondering how long it takes for them to get back to you?

Thanks

for me when I tried unsuccessfully for a similar position: one week to be sent a link to do the online tests. Then one month after that to be given an interview date.

Thank you. I have done the on line assessments so just waiting to see if I make it to the next stage

Good luck with your application.

I applied for a conductor job with Northern at the beginning of December, I got invited to do an online assessment a few days later which I completed last Monday and received and email inviting me for an interview next Wednesday.

I'm now swatting up on STAR technique but any help or advise from previous applicants will be more than welcome.

Make sure you do your research on the company, I got threw a curve ball which i didn't know, "who is the MD of Northern?"

Personally the interview was not as stressful for me as I have had in others.

Oh and wear a watch.

Thanks for the heads up about the MD question but what is the significance of wearing a watch?

There is a group exercise. And you had to keep aware of the time. I mean you could use your phone, but it doesn't look as good as using a watch and keeping your eye on the time.

Time keeping is everything with this role.

Thanks again.

There was no mention of a group exercise the invite.
What sort of things does it involve? Also how many STAR type questions did they ask and can you remember what they were?

There was a structured interview with a few questions that I had to use the STAR technique.

One that stood out was where I had to speak about a time I was under unexpected pressure and what did I do. (i'm sure if you dig around this forum there will be past threads on questions.)

Then after there was a group exercise, didn't last long about 30 mins.

I was in the Northern Offices around 2 hours and found out around a week later the result of the assessment/interview, but this was in May this year and the recruitment may of changed a bit.

What were the online tests? I’ve also thrown my hat into the ring for conductor role.

They send you a link to an external site but you can do some practice tests before you attempt the full version.
I had to do a Maths test and Verbal reasoning test which go harder as you went through the questions. I think each had around 18 questions and you have 30 minutes to complete each set.

Yeah I've just got the email from them to have a crack at the tests - got until the 20/12 to complete them. I'll have a whizz through the practice tests (my maths is shocking now though), and see how I get on later this week.

This could be fun. Or not. o_O:D

I heard back within a month to say I’d passed and that they would contact me soon for the next stage which is an interview.

Quick question chaps - this online assessment - does it have any bearing on the drivers test which I’m in the pot for too? i.e if I took this online test & failed would it count as my final strike for Arriva Northern? Have not taken conductors test before btw.

I've had my interview today for a Conductor role at Buxton.

It's now the wait to see if I've been successful.

It was tough and I came away thinking that I could have added more to my answers but we shall see.
