Wow. I'm surprised there is anyone working who has both:
knowedlge of a 707
route knowledge to Southampton.

There is one advantage at least, more people will be able to get on. It should maybe make boarding times faster, leading to less congestion.

I see that there will be no trains past midnight on News Eve / Day for stations souh of Woking.

I have a memory of stopping trains running to Guildford overnight in the past but also memories of this being discontinued and the trains then only running to Woking.

I don't know if many people from Guildford would go to Central London, compared to Woking and stations north of there. Obviously Woking is a handy place to terminate a train, irrespective of whether manu people from there would want to be out in Central London.

You wish.

That's what I thought at first too but not gonna happen.

several confused passengers on twitter claiming to be on the 1735 which was a ‘red metro train with Windsor ER’ on the display.

Waterloo guards managers and inspectors, as well as top link Waterloo and Wimbledon drivers are pretty much go anywhere.

The Tories are expected to bring a plan in for full-scale strike bans on the railways in tomorrows Queens Speech.

This is good news for passengers.

Until work to rule and overtime ban is brought in which is even more lovely! I love a good bit of industrial action on the railway!

There's a separate thread on the proposed legislation, so let's keep this one to the practical effects of the strike on travel.

All well & good providing ones personal circumstance can finance almost indefinite strike action of one form or another or periods of unemployment if everything goes **** up :s

My experience, on the Reading line at least, which is normally perpetually busy, is that people have used other means or simply not travelled.
Thanks, that's been my experience on other weekend only strikes, first time I've travelled to London during such a sustained strike or so close to Christmas!

Thanks for the other suggestions, my weekend is complicated enough so I'm trying to avoid too scenic a route!

It happened. Running ecs back from Southampton as 5Z52 to Wimbledon Park depot...

Interesting.

Maybe once the 701s are here someone may decide , whether the dft, swr, or rosco that maybe swr should keep and use the shiny, fully DOO compatible 707 trains to replace some desiros on Southampton to London shuttles or Southampton to Portsmouth trains.

But it's only suburban London where there will be doo remember, that's what the lovely first/MTR operators of swr have told everyone and that's what grayling etc said, so the dft is onboard.

....and before you know it doo is running in various forms on a wide arc radiating from London to Portsmouth and Southampton, the new suburbs of London.

Then the questioning of £40k guards starts to happen and the earlier Steer report (elsewhere in this thread or another) from about 3 years ago comes into play.

Edit: some grammatical changes

Well that’s the thing, it’ll be interesting (read concerning) to see how much of the SWR area is upgraded to ‘DCO’ lighting assessment and risk assessments.

Who says it will be DCO, there's loads of reports saying that DOO is the most cost efficient method of working. 80 seat majority...the future is not bright, it's not orange, it's blue. £40k with no operational input....really......????

Suppose the biggest irony is that some guards voted conservative. I have a lot of sympathy for many individuals, but many have brought the future on themselves.

Just to put things in perspective, I remember an article in BR Railnews around 1992 stating the new station lighting then being installed at Haslemere conformed to DOO standards

OBS staff still earn the same wage as they did before they were deskilled

It will be interesting to see what happens when the 313s go /contract expires

Indeed. Despite the extracts from Steer, which ,as an option, considers overnight mass redundancy, it's likely to be a gradual diminution of the role. Though I'd imagine a present guard in their 20s maintaing their current role and salary/conditions for >5+ years is slim...

I'm not sure

The On Board Sometimes have a role to play keying in at a local door to check for passengers needing assistance. That was of course not the original intention. Commuters might assume they still operate the doors !

.
..and in may places DOO mirrors were installed, but the method of operation never enacted.

Rules, regs, passenger numbers and technology have all moved on.....

I wonder if we are in new territory post GE2019. I don't enjoy saying it , but this government can do what it wants and if providing assistance, security and customer service and the odd imprisonable driver is a small price to pay for removing millions form the wage bill then who knows the future.....

Yes I agree this is a concern post election this time, however let's discuss these concerns in its own thread.

The RMT should nail down the agreements recently reached with Merseyrail Northern and West Mids

With a Corbyn Government guaranteeing a Guard on every train and defending unions not the greed of private firms it could have been very different.

Laughably some Train Drivers voted Tory as they regard themselves as middle class and thus Tory voters.

The Tories hold nothing but contempt for rail workers

With sadness, I concur.
