The shortest route by which regular passenger services operate plus any route that is no more than 3 miles longer than that route (per the distances given in the National Rail Timetable) is automatically Permitted unless the ticket is routed not to allow it.
Hmm, I think I get it, how about the following:

Are any of these valid
Day return New Mills Central to Manchester but return to New Mills Newtown
Rose Hill, Marple to Manchester but return to Marple
Settle to Leeds but return to Giggleswick
Thorne North to Sheffield return to Thorne South
Conwy to Chester but return to Deganwy or Llandudno (not Junction)
Hartford to Birkenhead but return to Northwich

Can anyone think of any others?

These stations are on completely different lines.
Rose Hill, Marple to Manchester but return to Marple
The line diverges after Romilley, however if there is no official easement in place I'd be surprised if anyone objected to this, but I'd ask Northern for their view on it.
Settle to Leeds but return to Giggleswick
Yes - this is covered by an "easement" which is advertised for the purpose of facilitating walkers.
Thorne North to Sheffield return to Thorne South
Tickets are issued from Thorne Stations, which both stations are members of.
Conwy to Chester but return to Deganwy or Llandudno (not Junction)
There is nothing to allow a double-back along the branch into Llandudno.
Hartford to Birkenhead but return to Northwich

Sorry I don't understand what you are asking.

But none of this relates to the thread this was originally posted in, which was about the shortest route (and routes no greater than 3 miles longer than the shortest route) between two stations, so I have split it into a new thread.

I think this is a case where the 3 mile rule is relevant. Conwy to Chester via Deganwy is valid ( under 3m over shortest route). I suspect you'll be able to get journey planners to validate Conwy to Chester via Llandudno as long as you make sure that at least one leg on the branch is on a bus.

That's fine, but I'd buy a ticket from New Mills Newtown instead as it's a bit cheaper. If you ask nationalrail.co.uk* for a journey from one New Mills station, it will often advise you to start by walking to the other.

None of the other journeys you listed involve stations with a walk defined between them, so you can't do something similar with those.

For the three mile rule (which is something completely different), your best option would probably be to request (for instance) a Marple-Manchester journey from a web site with Rose Hill Marple as a via point. If it finds something, you can treat that as being a valid route for the ticket it offers.
