Oh well if we’re in true pedant mode... when built, they didn’t have a TSG in the consist - they were all straight trailer seconds... and from memory, the 8-car 254s has two buffet/restaurant cars??

But - I’m just happy to see it looking great... the photos on twitter show they have done a fantastic job - full credit to LNER and the teams for putting this together
Ah yes, I'd clean forgot about the guard's coach!
But indeed, well done LNER and everyone who's worked together for a brilliant result!:D

The 253s were 7 carriages, while the 254s were 8. Herein lies another rivet-counting can of worms! 43006 (as she was), was a Western region machine, and part of a 7 carriage set originally.
43112 (as she was) was an ECML machine, and part of an 8 carriage set, so strictly speaking would be a 254 (to hand, I know not which exactly). As we know, the modern day 'Farewell Tour' set, is just 7 coaches. So should 112/312 call her what you will have her original 254 set number, imagining she'd been either been borrowed or the set was temporarily short formed? Or should she carry a 253 set number, not original to her or the route, but more in keeping with the formation of the tour set?

Having said all that, like I said a short while ago, whatever the outcome, the whole thing looks brilliant anyway!
I'll leave this here, and get my coat! o_O:lol:
Which type of carriage is missing from this set that it would have had to have made it up to 8 cars originally? Another Standard class carriage? (not for this exact same set etc, but for a 1978 era ECML HST in general?)

I believe it would have been TF-TF-TRUK-TS-TS-TRSB-TS-TS (though I might have the location of the TRSB in the formation wrong). So the tour formation is missing basically the TRSB entirely, has got a TGS rather than one of the TS vehicles and a TRFB rather than a TRUK.

Ainsworth74 beat me to it halfway through typing this post, but I thought I'd finish it anyway:

The tour set is formed:
TF - TF - TRFB - TS - TS - TS - TGS

The first twenty East Coast HSTs were originally formed:
TF - TF - TRUK - TS - TS - TRSB - TS - TS
(Reformed after April 1980 so that the TRUK and TRSB were adjacent)

The remainder of the East Coast fleet being initially formed as:
TF - TF - TRUB - TS - TS - TS - TS - TS

Where:
TF = Trailer First
TS = Trailer Standard
TGS = Trailer Guards Standard
TRUK = Trailer Restaurant Unclassified Kitchen
TRSB = Trailer Restuarant Standard Buffet
TRUB = Trailer Restaurant Unclassified Buffet (Which subsequently became the TRFB vehicles found in East Coast rakes to this day)

Thanks for both yours and Ainsworth's posts.

So did the TRSBs have standard class seating that was then subsequently altered to 1st class seat configuration?

Presumably the TRUKs were all altered inside to some other configuration (TRFBs?) and none survive with such interiors?

The TRSBs (37 built) and TRUKs (20 built) in ECML HST sets were both ultimately replaced by TRUBs (58 built). Most of the TRSBs retained standard class seating and were inserted into Cross-Country sets, where they mostly remained until the end of their service with Virgin. There were also some on the Western region, and ten there were refitted with first class seating as TRUBs.

The TRUKs found themselves largely without work in the HST fleet and twelve of the twenty were converted to loco-hauled RFMs for the West Coast main line (Becoming 10200 - 10211). A further four were converted to Royal Train vehicles (Becoming 2916 - 2919).

That's a very basic understanding - The reality with the various Eastern, Western and Cross-country fleet formations in their early years was a bit more convoluted.

Well, if I can remember the intricate details of the LNER HST livery compared with the 91/Mk4s in 35 years time, I'll be a very happy man! Back to the present, I'm just glad they're having a blooming good go at the original HST livery. Whether it's rivet-countingly perfect or not, I don't care because it still looks absolutely fantastic!
Completely agree. I only asked if there was a technical reason for it - e.g. making the door handles sit in the blue so they show up better. It's commendable that LNER have gone to such lengths to celebrate an icon.

My own effort from yesterday (17th) of 253003/W43006 at Craigentinny being readied for the farewell Tour. Depot visit was by invite.

It did look breathtaking in the flesh.

The buffet car looked amazing. That combination of colours reminded me of my Hornby trainset!20191218_093043.jpg

I hope someone at EMR is thinking about getting a set done out in IC swallow livery for the eventual MML retirement tour!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and still finding my way around :)

Here is a photo I took of 43006 on the rear of the train during the stop at Aberdeen today. The whole train looked rather splendid in its original livery, the staff were very friendly and attentive which made for a good atmosphere onboard. 20191218_134441.jpg

Welcome - and thanks for posting such a great photo!

I hope it's going to still look that shiny by the time it gets to the east midlands....!

I'm impressed at how it's staying so clean and shiny in this weather. Unless I've only seen photos taken first thing in the morning!

I took that photograph yesterday morning - not a drone photograph, just a high vantage point. Is there a link to the STV page where they used the photograph?

Not my pics.

Just saw it passing Dunblane. Wasn't expecting to see it, but it a few minutes late and that meant I just got to see it on the walk home from school (I'm 16), was doing only maybe 40 or so, but still looks great in the flesh!

It’s staying incredibly clean to be fair - but the weather has generally actually been okay - dry during the day yesterday and only snow on the ground today
