Good to see the RMT are out in force again. After demanding that the Metro return to state ownership after the failed contracting out to DB Regio, the RMT are now threatening strike action because they're getting state-sector pay rises and not private-sector pay rises.

Drivers on the Tyne and Wear Metro network are to be balloted for strikes in protest at a government-imposed 1% pay cap, union bosses have said.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) said its 250 members were classed as local government employees and were caught in the "trap" of a pay cap.

General secretary Mick Cash said members were at the point where they were "prepared to fight for justice".

Mr Cash said: "With [retail price] inflation running at 4% our members should not be forced through centrally imposed austerity measures to take a hit on their standards of living...

A Nexus spokesman said: "We have worked hard with all our trades unions to agree a pay settlement which provides a fair deal for staff within the limits of public sector pay restraint by which Nexus is bound...

Make your minds up, brothers. Anyone would think they're just being greedy.

RMT advised their members to accept the pay deal iirc. There is more to this dispute than just pay though, various grades are fed up of the ill treatment dished out by the hierarchy. This is just the start.

They are public sector workers now, like other public sectors workers there is a pay rise cap. Why should this group of the public sector be treated any differently than other parts of the public sector?

They'll have absolutely next to no public support. Local press are already knife sharpening with £30k metro drivers to demand more money articles

Indeed. They're local authority staff, which is what they wanted. Everyone else in local authority work is just glad to still have a job.

Not that public support matters to them.
