I only had a DMI with them (or SAM as they call it...) but was sure I’d heard they were national, thanks for clarifying.

No probs .. yeah took mine 6 months ago .. when she said I passed I asked to national or enhanced she said for jobs with them they only test to national .

I had my stage 2 assessment today at Watford so I arrived in the closest car park to the address at 08:30 and proceeded to walk following my sat nav. My sat nav had taken me to the address I was given number 1 wellstones and this was a garage so I phoned up and said where I was and was told to follow the service road as I’m at the wrong end so I said should I be heading towards the market place and was told no so long story short 6 phone calls later I spoke to a gentleman who explained that I need to be in the market place and that they are opposite the NatWest and above the restaurant called ask I ended up arriving at 09:10 and I was turned away. Gutted is an understatement but hopefully I can reschedule. So to anyone going in the near future find the ask restaurant near the NatWest in the high street.

I get that it’s their policy. But to me I find the place very unfriendly. I hated my time there in that building. Couldn’t wait to get out lol.

My son had his 2nd assessment & MMI last Wednesday in Watford (I live in Watford, easy for him to get there with Dad cabs. Plus I had my own assessment there 13 years ago so knew where it was).

He got an email about an hour ago confirming he has passed everything! Yay! They have now passed his details to Freightliner for his DM interview. So pleased for him. He has applied at my TOC (Arriva Rail London/London Overground) 4 times in the last 2 years, only the last time did he actually get a 'thanks but no thanks' email! And I see some of the trainees coming through now, and wouldn't even rely on them as platform staff. Makes me mad! Sorry.....

Anyone have any ideas how long he may have to wait for the interview? And where it may be? Good luck to the others waiting to hear.

Thanks. Do they ever interview anywhere apart from Crewe?

Would be easier for him to get the train if it is there as it’s just under a 200 miles drive for him. Plus he would be more relaxed sitting on the train.

Because it is less responsibility than driving a train. I didn’t say it wasn’t a responsible job, just driving is more so.
Why is driving a train more responsible? You’re trained to a higher standard and get paid a lot more as a driver, but ultimately you’re still responsible for the safety of thousands of people every day as a member of station staff in the same way you are as a driver. Maybe I’m being too generic with it :E

Your initial post just came accross almost arrogant. Apologies if it wasn’t intended that way.

I think you took it too literally, I honestly didn’t mean anything by it, but I should have been more specific!

On our lines, more the Watford to Euston DC, the uniformed platform staff were ‘moved’ to other roles, and now in their place are agency suicide watch staff (whatever than means?). Their training must of consisted of being shown how to be on their phone every time a train arrives at the platform. It’s a joke.

From the station to Basford Hall is a good half hour walk, or a taxi ride.

Can anyone advise what the salaries are for Freightliner? From trainee to full whack.

I've got an interview for freightliner in the new year, but I'm also on the final stages of a job with Greater Anglia (had medical, waiting start date). I was thinking of going ahead with the interview as a fall back in case anything was to go wrong with my GA application but at the same time I dont want to waste their time, or mine. Plus obviously the pay plays a factor in my decision!

Thanks in advance

Personally, I drove from Birmingham up to Crewe the night before and spent the night. Wanted to make sure I was as fresh as possible and wouldn’t be late.

The Conductor does most of the Platform Train Interface jobs nowadays. Some (busy) stations have platform staff still and they do an important safety critical job, but they are slowly being phased out. Remember everyone has their own opinion on here, some like to comment on every single thread and think they know it all....but they dont. Take it with a pinch of salt.

Good look to your son, I personally think the tests are the hardest part and now he has passed them, he has a huge advantage if he applies else where.

Keep the faith, it's a slow process.

I was in the same position myself but the other way round GA is better money training but less when qualified just under 30 training 52 when qualified. FL is 20 in the classroom 25 whilst trainer driving and just under 55 trained for HH. But you don't get the discount travel with FL.

Thanks, I didn’t mean to annoy anyone, honestly!!

It’s true what you said about platform staff. Our lines multi stop if no one is familiar with them) have less and less platform staff now. Some of the busier stations are still manned. But most not. And as we are only DOO, it makes it very hard sometimes to dispatch yourself safely. But that’s for another thread.

He is extremely happy to have got this far already, and fingers crossed he will do well on the interview, he is a lovely boy. He has been doing shift work for 4 years, so at least it won’t come as a shock should he get in.

I was a bit worried that at 22 (23 in Feb), they may consider him too young? But obviously not. As a business I would have thought it would be more cost beneficial to train younger drivers than oldies like me (just turned 50, been driving 12 years). But in my time on the railway, nothing management do amazes me now, as very little makes sense from a business point of view! Lol!

I take it you haven’t read any further in the thread?

I explained what I meant immediately.

I did press reply before I read the next message tbh yes. We are all equally important, maybe your son should start out as something else. I am sure he will be driving at some point! I started out as a trolley dolly myself...

Been in the pool since early December 2018, got the call on the 10th October this year saying I'd find out within a month if I'd be on a course in early 2020. Heard nothing positive back yet. I emailed them a couple of weeks ago. Got the standard response, no information can be given due to ever changing business needs, and all that stuff. Said they would be in touch in due course. Just got to keep waiting I suppose and hope it all works out at some point.
