The five non refurbished units that have original interiors must be the target for preservationists. These being 003/13/29/30 and 67. I think 13 and 67 are in warm store at Heaton.

Half of 142029 (55570) is now reported on WNXX as being at the Chasewater Railway

The other half arrived today

Confirmed sighting on a low loader heading south on the M1 earlier this afternoon, a couple of miles north of Tibshelf services.

IMG_20191223_135744_712.jpg

We were driving from Yorkshire to the Midlands and stopped at Tibshelf for a coffee. We saw it again briefly on the A5148, as it turned onto the A5 towards Chasewater.

I believe that was the rationale behind keeping the 142s specifically longer as they're signed by more crews.
The original plan was for the 144s to go first. I'm not sure why that changed. The 142s are more reliable than the 144s although, in my ipinion, the interiors of the 144s are less battered than the 142s.

Thanks for sharing
Such a shame these had to be retired though
They are worthy of continued use in heritage operations, but they were a nightmare when having to ride on one from one side of Devon to another on the way home.

I can't imagine the horror of a Pacer tour. Spending a full day sat on a loaded Pacer.

I refer the honourable member to a tweet of mine from 7th December:

If you could arrange a run on a 142 with the original bus seats from Euston to Glasgow and back ( could use a 75mph freight path most of the way ) then I'll ride it for charity both ways.

Problem with a long distance pacer tour it would have to stop frequently for toilet breaks (unless the rules are relaxed for a short time ;) )

I agree with that. Maybe they could pull of a HST an repaint a set into the original Regional Railways livery - but it is Norther, so it probably be just a few pieces of it!
You're showing your (lack of) age there... the RR livery wasn't the original! The first few were in GMPTE Orange, including preserved 001 which will probably be returned to that colour scheme once it goes on display.

Some were in Provincial light blue though.
True, but the first few were orange units specifically for Manchester area routes. For those lucky people too young to remember, the three liveries carried by 142s from new were: GMPTE orange; Provincial blue; and the brown version of the blue which was used on the units destined for the West Country. They didn't last long down there though!
143s carried Provincial blue from new, and all 144s were in the earlier version of WYPTE "Raspberry ripple" with the broad beige stripe.

Off the top of my head as delivered:
142001 - 14 GMPTE Orange. 142015 - 27 Cornish Skipper Chocolate and Cream.
142028 - 96 Provincial Light Blue.

The GMPTE units were the last sets to retain SCG gearboxes. By the end of 1990 just 142006 -9/011-014 retained them.

I remember well seeing a rake of Skippers heading south through Bridgwater on their way south to Laira. Cd have been at least 5 units. Cant remember the year though. Only stayed down there a while-did they squeak on tight curves!!!

My first ride on an ex Cornish Skipper was from Wigan NW to Blackpool North in October 1987. The Skippers were among the first to receive Voith gearboxes after they had moved North.
