As a New Year is almost upon us it is expected that the Class 745 Flirts will take over the Inter City Service from London to Norwich.
Hoping that this thread will chart the withdrawal of the trusted Class 90's and their new roles with Freightliner.
Anyhow enjoy this Music Video from VooDoo Browne filmed at Ingatestone Station in 2014

Can you remind me please if there are any plans for the Mk3 LHCS?

would be good to get some diagrams info (if that's possible) to help people make the most of them before withdrawal.

Pretty much every Norwich service right now apart from the small number that are run by bins or bins subbing for 90s.

No new stock is in service on the line yet.

Thanks - I guess it will be a case of waiting for the changes to kick in over coming months.

Who would want them? Okay they have had plug sockets & retention toilets fitted but let's not forget the things are pushing 40yrs old. Storing them is hugely expensive so no other option.

Hence my question; for comparison, I wasn't sure how many of the HST Mk3s had these features added.

Aside from the ones coming out of Wabtec at the moment, none have retention toilets, and all but the LNER ones (?) don't have plug sockets.

I'm guessing all those rumours of high speed freight or parcels work was just a load of hot air eh? at least the 90s will have some work, but I wish the 91s some will be replacing just kept the 91s on the 225s....

I'd think charter operators might be on the market for replacement for their (non retention tanks) Mk1 and Mk2 stock.

I think it was my August 2019 Modern Railways magazine that GWR said something about wanting some of the GA Mark 3 seated coaches for extra capacity on the sleepers. I know it would mean rewiring.

Oh sorry, that looks really unclear.
What I meant was I wish the 225 sets that will be 90 hauled on the WCML by the new Open Access operator would still be using 91s.

Fair enough, thought that’s what you meant.

The Class 90s (when they were deputising for Class 91s on the East Coast) reportedly only lost a few minutes when operating Leeds services. The 90s have better acceleration, which is the critical factor for trains operating on the West Coast.

In any case, it looks like Grand Central are leasing their locomotives from DB Cargo, rather than Freightliner who are due to be leasing 13 of the GA Class 90s.

The ex GWR HST Mk 3s have plug sockets and have done since the FGW Dynamic Lines refurb where the new seats were fitted.

They shouldn’t need rewiring should they? The sleeper stock is locomotive hauled MK3s, so they should just be able to be coupled up and work straight away. Didn’t GWR hire an ex GA buffet whilst their’s were being refurbished as a spare vehicle?

I thought perhaps they'd need rewiring as the GA Mark 3's were hauled by Class 90's. I'd be surprised if they don't need rewiring to run with Class 57's.

I'm fairly sure the standard Mk3 LHCS uses a 1000V DC supply.

Mark 3 LHCS will operate just as happily off the supply from an electric loco as it will from the supply from Class 31, 47/4, 57 etc etc. No modification needed.

Heritage lines one would think.
Are EMR having tanks fitted to there's in the short term to help solve PRM requirements?
Air con stock isn't much use to a heritage line. Unless they want to grow tomatoes.

Really? I'm sure I've ridden Aircon stock on at least 2 different heritage lines and the only tomatoes seen were being cut up in a RFM kitchen for sandwiches.....

For a number of reasons including why would I want to ride in a carriage that has double glazing and fixed windows that are designed to ensure that I cannot hear the loco on the front?

MNR uses a RFM on its Intercity set with Travellers Fare style retro menus.
