Hi All,

I got my assessment for conductor at Southern HQ in Croydon soon (17/5).

I'm in receipt of the package of literature explaining what will happen on the day. It doesn't, however,
go into detail about the tests.

Is the concentration test group bourdon or scaat? Is it done on paper or on screen?

Also does anyone know if there is a comprehension test (similar to sandite on the drivers test)?

Any more handy info on the conductor assessment process by anyone who has done it (Southern or other)
will be welcome.

I have read the hand-outs cover to cover but there are no clues to the above, and I like to be a bit
more clued up than I am at present.

Of course, any help from you guys is 100% appreciated, and worth beers if we ever should meet!

The concentration test can be either or, i done the dots myself , but my TOC changes it periodically. The test i done was on paper but Southern, may well be different. There may also be a comprehension test, but i'm sure you will have no problem with it. My TOC brought in a PA test, but Southern, may well be different again fegards that. PM me if you wish and i'll endeavour to help. There is a myriad of websites that can assist too . SlamDoor recently done this test, so you may wish to seek his advice also. Let us know how you go, and well done!!!! I may well hold you to that beer too!!!!

When I had my assesments which must be at least 3 years ago now, the consentration test i took was on paper and it was the scaat test with the shapes.

If I remember correctly SWT guards/ commercial guards test was and I belive still is basic maths (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) followed by a basic english paper given a test book of paragraphs to read then answer questions on (most of the questions if not all may not be to do with the railway), you may get given another test to do with ticketing depending on if its part of the job you are going for once that is all complete you then get a short break while they mark the tests and give you teh results, if you've passed those tests you then go into another room for the consentration test (which was on paper and was the shapes) you then do a comms test where you listen to a tape recording where you are a route controller and a driver has left you a message that you then have to relay to someone else and once thats done you go back into the waiting room for the results, if you pass all of those tests you are sent home and will recive a letter to go back for an interview and role play which if you pass both of those you get a letter about a medical then if you pass the medical you get another letter with a start date. This is the proceedure for South West Trains and I am not sure if Southern adopt the same procedure but i wouldn't think it'd be much different.

hope this helps and good luck with it all,

Alan

Thanks for that 455/8, i'd forgotten about the role play! For the record, there may also be a structured interview during the assessment day consisting of you explaining how you acted in certain situations such as a time you were involved in a circumstance of emergency or unusual occurrence. Best of british again. :)

Hello Navydavy

Good Luck with your upcoming assessment. I too have one on shortly with Scotrail for a conductor. Let me know how things progress. Mine's is a few days before yours so I will tell you what happens in it, although a different TOC I would think the tests will be broadly similar.

Completed the assessment with flying colours:o. Have my interview on 28th so good luck to me!

Thanks for all the advice. It was all completely spot on and I do think I had the 'edge' when it came to the role play etc thanks to you guys.

This forum is absolutely priceless.

Hi, I have an assessment in just over two weeks. Has anyone got the Group-Bourdon test from "Digital Reality"? I'm unsure of the controls :D And honestly what I actually have to do on that test, given I have never done one.

Thanks

Thanks

First of all, the object of the test is to mark all the patterns that are made up of 4 dots only (you will be given patterns of 3,4 and 5 dots to work through).

The controls are simple and only use the left, right and up arrows on your keyboard):

- To move to the next pattern, press the right arrow

- To highlight a pattern of 4 dots press the up arrow

- To move back to the last pattern (for example you missed one) press the left arrow.

However, like the real test, you are only ever able to move forward or back one at a time. So if you see that you have made a mistake 2 patterns previous to the one your on - you've lost it for good!

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I'm hoping Southern use the Scaat test instead.
