I will get shot around these parts for my answer, but here goes....

Class 180s when they were working for Northern on the Blackpool services. Used to have a lovely commute to Manchester in the former 1st class carriages.

Do 180s count? They've been around since 2000!

Or are we allowed to nominate new services using old trains? In which case I'd like to put forward the GWR Castle HSTs.

I'd also like to nominate the Class 397s. Haven't been on one yet but I've seen them in sidings at Longsight and Crewe and they look wonderful. Arguably the best looking multiple unit of the century. I only say arguably because the 180s exist.

Anyone who thinks IETs are an "all-round great train" immediately has their opinions on rolling stock dismissed as far as I'm concerned!

I'd say the same for those who dislike the MK5s! And there's one thing I like about the IETs more than anything else:

There's no 180s on Great Western! Grand Central and whoever else want to/are using them are seriously welcome to those heaps of junk!

Class 700s for how they've helped increase capacity on the overcrowded Thameslink routes, not to mention the decent ride quality, superb acceleration/deceleration, information screens, and the improved sense of space and security.

This is followed by the Class 345s (a nice surprise).

Oi! Hands off my beloved 180s! They're fantastic trains.

Oh you are so welcome to them! They are better with power sockets, but the infernal things bowling me out for HSTs on GC in years gone by will not soon be forgotten!

I'd take one over an 800 any day. Although as much as I love them, if given the choice I would also go with an HST...

For me it's the Class 377/6's, they're pretty good units serving my local line and will have to get used to the sight of more of them potentially as the 455's are expected to depart at some point this decade

loco - 68s

mu - stadler 755

hopefully the flirts will settle down and give good service, thus enabling the Basil moniker to be consigned to where it ought to - the bin

Class 195 & 331 from the drivers point of view. Better than driving Pacers, Sprinters and 319's all the time.

Class 70 "Power Haul" worth a mention

The 350/3s and 350/4s are great especially since they had the speed upgrade that the other 350s have been getting recently

were the 350/2s introduced last decade? cause if so they are worthy additions I would say even if they don’t have a permanent home

I thought they were built around 2010/2011 ?

I don't remember seeing any when I worked at Oxford Road in 2009.
According to Wikipedia (yes, I know...) the first two were delivered to Newport Docks on 8 November 2009, so their inclusion in this topic is, let's say borderline.

Yeah I assumed the OP was referring to new build stock during the decade, otherwise as you rightly state things like the power door fitted HSTs are worthy of inclusion, which seems to widen the scope of the conversation somewhat excessively.
The class 172's
The 172s have been an absolute boon to the Snow Hill lines: I was relieved that they had replaced the last of the 150s when I started to regularly commute on those routes.
Why the love for Mark 5s? Rubbish seats and appalling ride quality. Sounds rather like enthusiast loco=good regardless view of the world!
The OP asked for a subjective opinion rather than a quantitative assessment, so personal preference will take precedence.

My criteria for recommendation are them having around 100 more seats than a class 185, a quiet travelling environment inside and a loud named loco on the outside, and the fact that I never expected to see the return of loco hauled services to the North Transpennine services. The seats are identical to those fitted to pretty much all new build long distance stock introduced during the decade.

Errm...
That's a hard question: I really want to say the 800s, because they are so popular with TOCs and are a fairly groundbreaking train. But I can't because of the 'ironing board' seats.

It'll have to be the 331s.

I'd like to answer this but around us we've nothing so new, not even close. We do have now Northern's 195s, from the timetable change, though I've not had chance to ride on one yet.

Interestingly EMR's 'new' regional 170s will be coming on stream; these are the trains that left us over a decade ago. Ah well musn't grumble, happy new year everyone.

Class 68's. One of the best recent trains/locos to be constructed.
Closely followed by 387s as I used to commute on them through Thameslink.

Loco Wise, it would have to be the Stadler / Vossloh Class 68 & 88 Family. A nice (and rare) combination of innovation, practicality and styling.

EMU wise, undeniably the CAF 397. For a brilliant balance of looks vs practicality, with decent luggage space and seats that line up with the windows.

I won't include any of Electrostar family in my choices as, although they may have been introduced up to last year, it is still virtually a 20 year old design with only software and seat changes. I was never that impressed with them when they came to Southern, and I don't think I'll be that impressed with them up to now.

Some are being introduced this year!
