Hi all,

I am very new to modelling and my knowledge of classes etc is quite limited.

Does anyone know what freight locomotives operate on the above line? The liveries they use or any pictures would be massively appreciated!

My house is very close to the line and I see quite a bit of freight when walking the dog but no idea what type they are?!

Many thanks for any help!

Southbound container trains from Teesside are running via Darlington (with a run round in the Up Sidings), I think because the higher shipping containers being used these days put the train out of gauge via Yarm. The empty flats can still run northbound via Yarm. Same gauge issue with Stockton / Stillington I believe for loaded trains to and from Scotland.

Cheers! I didn't know that

Quite a few container trains use the branch now. They raised the bridge at Dinsdale some years ago to accommodate these services.

Boulby potash trains from Middlesbrough to Saltburn West Jn still? IIRC they used to be DBS 60s then Freightliner Heavy Haul 66s. I've moved away so not up to date.

As noted southbound container trains with higher containers go via Darlington as they are out of gauge via Yarm. However the recently introduced DRS service between Tees Dock and Daventry does goes via Yarm. I assume that the wagons on the DRS service are those low-floor wagons that have been specially constructed to carry higher containers. None of the northbound trains are empty flats; they carry containers which can travel via Yarm but are, apparently, restricted to 5mph through Yarm tunnel.
As for the Stillington branch the overbridge at Carlton was rebuilt about 5 years ago to allow higher containers to pass through but there must be another issue somewhere as the Tees Dock to Scotland traffic still goes via Darlington.
Additionally there is a DB Schenker operated train between Tees Yard and North Blyth, consisting of HTA wagons which travels via Darlington, as does the return, even though they can go via Stillington.
Not forgetting the loaded pipe train from Hartlepool South Works to Georgemas Junction which runs on Tuesdays & Thursdays as required. The return empties on Thursdays & Saturdays also travel via Darlington.

Hi all,

Many thanks for the fantastic info!

As a side issue when walking my dog in the summer a Grand Central from Sunderland to Kings Cross was diverted down the line past Allen’s West.

Would ECML services ever use this diversion? Or has a 125 ever been down the line?

Thanks.

Yes, ECML services have reversed at Darlington and gone that way on occasion. All sorts have been seen there in the past from HST's, 91's, a Thumper.......

There is a regular container working to Teesport (from Glasgow?) in mid-afternoon which I've seen a few times quite often hauled by 66109 'Teesport Express'

A couple of weeks ago while waiting at Urlay Nook crossing I was expecting to be see a soon to go Pacer on a Bishop Auckland-Saltburn sevice so I was pleasantly surprised when top and tail 68005/68006 trundled past.

Me and my family were on a Grand Central from Sunderland to KGX and it reversed at Dinsdale a few year ago.

At the time they said the line was blocked, it took us about 15 mins to go about 1/4 of a mile for some reason.
