The 142 Wikipedia article is now claiming that TfW Rail have a fifth "spare parts" unit - 142049. When did this one move...? Was it moved by road like the fourth, or by rail like the first three...?
It was still there at gascoigne Wood yesterday so I assume it’s still just 2 at Landore and 1 at Cardiff

Do you mean the small extra air intake grille thing that many FNW 142s got? What was that in aid of anyway?
I'd say probably related to cab heaters, ex-FNW 142s (including Merseyrail ones) had two separate cab heater controls for drivers side and guards side. Ex-ATN (Heaton) 142s only have one cab heater switch which operates blowers on both sides of the cab. Some ex-Merseyrail 142s didn't have the extra vent on the cab front, though all of them certainly had the second cab heater switch mod. The Heaton 142s have by far the better cab heating most likely due to bring less draughty as the cab/saloon bulkhead is properly flush to the exterior walls on Heaton units (Newton Heath units have a gap of a couple of inches all around that bulkhead with black foam stuffed into it) and I suspect that some draughtproofing within the cab fronts was dispensed with on Newton Heath 142s.

Thankyou, interesting.
The point I was making was I still cant get my head around how Northern can manage without the remaining 47 Pacers and 20 153s without more hand me down units.
It would be interesting to know how many dmus Northern actually need out to operate a full peak service and how many are typically in or awaiting repair/ maintenance.
Happy new year to all.
K

There's still around 20 195s to enter service, and if the 769s ever enter service they could free up around 14 sprinters, but agree that it's still likely there will be a shortfall especially once the 153s are gone.

I suspect Northern are optimistic on the percentage of the fleet they expect to be in use each day going by the shortforms. Currently there's a Leeds - Knottingley diagram and a Blackpool - York left uncovered due to unit shortages which has caused cancellations throughout the day, as well as a Leeds - Nottingham and Leeds - Wigan being cancelled for the same reasons. That suggests Northern are at least 4 units short just around Leeds today, and once you factor in the December timetable change reduced the number of double sets it's not a great picture

Yes, my thoughts entirely. Anyone any spare dmus?
Also after the PRM works I reckon they have around 70 dmus to complete the interior refresh to "as new condition" which will take quite a while.

Seems to be false info then. And as 142033 has in fact gone to South Wales Police not TfW Rail, yes it will just be those 3.

I head Angel we’re selling them for about £7000, not sure about transportation costs
I think it underlines how broken UK railways are and what a raw deal Northern passengers were getting when you consider annual leasing costs on these were in excess of £125,000. Now they the Pacers have some competition in the 195s the leasing company only want £7,000 from willing bidders to buy the things outright.

Does anyone know if the pacers stored at Barrow are visible from the station, if not the best way to see them, I still need 007 and 034.
I also need 032, can’t see any info on this on the thread. My other need is 004, any info would be much appreciated.

004 was paired with 055 on Monday just gone. It went to Stalybridge from Southport IRC.
I think its one of the stayers and based at Newton Heath for the time being.

Post #2026 has something on the barrow units, 32 is warm stored at Heaton and 142004 is in service at newton Heath. 142004 is supposed to be staying till the beginning of June however 142032 is not this will most likely be on one of the Heaton - gascoigne wood runs this week. There is a thread here for class 142 sightings https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/northern-class-142-sightings.173851/

If they are still in the same place they were when they arrived 34 is against the buffers at the station end, visible from the depot access road through the gate. 007 is in the row that backs onto the houses and can be seen from the alleyway that runs down the back of the terraced houses. Go out of the station, turn right and it's a 5 minute walk, if that.

Important caveat on the dates: just because the dispensation says a particular date, it doesn't necessarily mean a fleet will be in service or staying until then. It is a "drop dead" date.

As an example, XC have a dispensation for one HST set. In the event, it isn't needed as the last non-compliant set was stopped before the new year and has now gone to Wabtec.
