EMR have recently re-liveried one of the EX greater Anglia class 156s into the new EMR Regional livery. When it was re-liveried it was also numbered 156909, does anybody know the reason for the number change? it was suggested to me that it was to keep them separate from there class 156/4s because the 2 are not able to couple. this does not seem right however as the unit was previously 156409 and would have been in the same batch produced as some of the EMR ones.

According to the other threads it is to do with incompatibility between the PA systems that have been replaced since introduction by models that aren't compatible with each other.

AFAIK all 156s are just 156s, there are no individual subclasses. As to multi working, they will be able to but as Qwerty mentions, the PA won't function correctly.

They can work with EMRs Class 153 fleet, but as mentioned above cannot currently work with the 156 & 158 fleet. They will however be able to work with the Class 170 Fleet when they arrived down from ScotRail - the PA system is the same as fitted to the 170 fleet.

Surely it can work (as in multi) with other 15x trains just the PA won't won't?

Technically yes, but as of yesterday doing so would breach equalities legislation, and those units aren't covered by the dispensation granted for the 153s and 156s which were part of the long-term EMT/EMR fleet.

I hadn't appreciated the legislation went as far as that

It mandates working passenger information systems. What will actually happen in cases where those systems become defective during a journey is another thing though. Hopefully we won't have cancellations simply because a PIS screen has too many dropped pixels!

Exactly what I was thinking about - what if the PIS goes wonky? It's not too common thankfully but does happen. Never had it happen on a 156 though, perhaps that's a good sign!

The two differences and issues are as mentioned above in part due to the PIS Systems - The PIS in the EMR Fleet utilises the now bog standard Train FX System, while the Greater Anglian fleet utilisies a system based on the Bombardier MITRAC set up - Unfortunately hence why they don't and won't talk to each other.

The other issue is that the two "Call for Aid" systems won't talk to each other too, so wouldn't show up in a cab with the Train FX system.

PIS systems often do not give out correct information during degraded working and engineering works
