What does that mean:
lived away?
been away on holiday?
ever been outside the town/city boundary?

On Mums side of the family - her parents and grandparents were born and bred in Norwich, but of my sister and I, she was actually born inside the city boundary and I was born just outside the official city boundary, although if any one asks I was born in Norwich. Dad was a foreigner as he was from South Wales, but moved to Norwich in the late 50s to be nearer two of his sisters.

Well, I know quite a few people who never lived in a town|city & never left their place of birth. Farmers?
But some of them - only male ones though - were conscripted & had to leave for a while.
The lucky ones keep talking about that ( twas all the adventure they ever had).
Some of them never came back, R.I.P.
& the other ones never wanted to talk about the horrors. <(

I've known my brother-in-law for nearly thirty years, he lives in Peacehaven and in that time, as far as I know he's gone no further east than Eastbourne (because his brother lives there) and no further west than Shoreham (for the airshow).

I know a woman who has never left the county of Yorkshire in her entire life.

And why would you I suppose ;)

My Lancastrian father-in-law introduced me to a man in his 80s who had a smallholding in Padiham, Lancs, who'd not only never left Lancashire, but had never been further than Blackburn. He was, needless to say, a bachelor!

Another guy, in his 60s, I know slightly and has never been out of Cornwall. Apparently he once agreed to drive to Yorkshire for a family occasion, but on the A30 when he saw the 'Welcome to Devon' sign coming up he stopped and did a u-turn!

I've never left my hometown, then again I'm still a teenager!

As much as I'd love to, I don't see myself leaving for at least another ten years. I simply don't have the money, and won't for quite some time.

When I lived in Taunton, my dad worked in Wellington with people who went to Taunton (and no further) once or twice a year for the big Christmas shopping session and to get new school clothes for their kids. They were astonished that he drove there and back each day, and when he said he was going to Yeovil to watch the football on a Tuesday night their jaws hit the floor!

I suppose this is a question of mobility in that we are much more mobile these days than in days gone by. I suspect if we asked the question 100 years ago we might get more examples particularly from the older generation (I say the older generation as 100 years ago many young men will have been forced to leave their city to fight in the First Wold war).

The closest I can get is an elderly aunt who has never been abroad.

On the flip side of that my Mum grew up in Fife and some of her childhood friends have never been out of Fife - why they’d subject themselves to the misery of that I don’t know. :p

I have a friend who was born in his aunt's cottage. His father bought adjacent land and built a house for his family.

When my friend got married he and his wife bought more adjacent land and built a house on it.

He renovated his aunt's cottage after she died and his daughter lives there.

He has plans to build a bungalow on his land to live in for his final years so will have spent his entire life living in four different houses without 50 yards of each other.

He's recently sold his parents' house following their deaths and found it very odd having strangers living next door.

Perhaps not what you mean, but I know quite a few people back home who have never left the island.

I have heard of people in MK who had never been to London, though it's quite rare these days.

Is known in Cambridge too. Go further away from London (e.g. to Bolton), and there are quite sizeable chunks of the population who've never been to London.

Surely its not much on the train somewhere. Ten years in same town , i have some respect for that.

I do find it fascinating the reasons why. I suppose i love to explore new places. I know a few people that dont go out unless they have to, i had to show a 22 year old to use r=the train and get a ticket.

The opposite applies I'm sure. I recall that when I had a day off work, I mentioned to my colleagues that I was going to Edinburgh, to which one replied "I've been to Scotland once", which amused me as its somewhere I have been known to go twice in a week! Same colleague told me they were taking him mum to London for a weekend once "as she'd never been before". It goes to show how some people live in a small world and travel very little.

Yeah , i suppose there's different reasons, no urge to travel. I go abroad like one or two times a year and some people are like 'oh your always travelling' and then its ' how do you afford this'

Out of town or not out their local area.
When I lived in the Portsmouth area I met locals who boasted that they've never been to London. North of the south Downs was considered an extraordinary journey, and I think some of them even suffered altitude sickness if they ventured over Portsdown Hill. Some of them had been overseas though, (IoW I think). :)

I know countless people who've only ever lived in one village / town / city, including many family members. It's quite common.

Being Welsh and living away you get used to people saying things like "I went to Cardiff once and liked it" and them being surprised when you say you've never been to anywhere in South Wales.

(Not entirely true, I've been to Newport for the day but only left the station to have a cigarette - on a First Great Western assessment day)

Well, I've lived in Scotland for 15 years now and I've never been to Skye or the Western Isles so you're not doing too bad.

By leaving I mean moving permanently. I'm travelling all around the country these days. If I have the money I can get as far as Manchester and back in one day.

In hindsight I wasn't being very clear, I leave town all the time, but I've lived here all my life. I think I may have misunderstood the title of the thread, apologies.

I'm not exactly fond of my hometown, the only things keeping me here are my lack of money and my friends and family being here.
