Quick question, and an oldie that I am sure has been answered before.

If I hold a Saveaway and GM Rail Ranger, is that valid to travel Liverpool-Manchester via Chat Moss?

If such a combination is valid does the train need to stop at Newton-le-Willows?

Thanks.

Why are you not also asking if it is necessary for the train to stop at Patricroft?

A Wayfarer / Saveaway combination is unequivocally valid Liverpool to Manchester on the Chat Moss route stopping at Newton-le-Willows.

Technically there is a gap between a Saveaway and a GM Rail Ranger unless you argue that both are valid beyond the last station / stretch of track at which they are valid - e.g. Saveaway to Newton-le-Willows, GM Rail Ranger to Patricroft / Parkside Junction.

There is some previous discussion here about the Wayfarer / Saveaway option where a view is expressed that it wouldn't be valid on a train that didn't stop at Newton-le-Willows (or Earlestown). https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...-to-manchester-adventure.112529/#post-2088136 although this map is quite interesting https://tfgm.com/public-transport/train/ticket-area-map in that the valid routes go right up to the boundary beyond Parkside Junction and this one appears to go beyond Newton-le-Willows https://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/Site Documents/MerseyrailNetworkMap.pdf.

It will probably be safer to use a GM Wayfarer as that has validity at Newton-le-willows (and Earlestown), at least there isn't a gap.

But if you want to bash the 68/802s between Liverpool/Manchester, probably the safest (in terms of less arguments) is a Cheshire Day Ranger

Since the discussion you link to the NRCOT have superseeded the NRCOC and NRCOT 14.2 now clearly states that local rovers are valid for travel on non stop services where there is a common station that the 2 rovers change over at (in this case Newton le Willows (or Earlestown) for Saveaway+GM Wayfarer combination. As there is no common station between a Saveaway and GM rail ranger this combination would not be valid.

I've used combo Merseytravel concessionary disabled pass & GM Wayfarer via the Chat Moss route many times so using Saveaway & GM Wayfarer combo is fine don't think you'll be allowed to use the GM Rail Ranger.

The Rail Ranger costs £7.00.

You can travel as often as you like on Greater Manchester trains outside peak times
https://tfgm.com/tickets-and-passes/train-rail-ranger-adult

Also the GM Rail Ranger has the 4.01pm to 6.29pm weekday peak restriction which the GM Rail Ranger is not valid for travel, the GM Wayfarer & Cheshire Day Ranger doesn't have this restriction, only restrictions they have they're not valid until 09.30[9am for the Cheshire Day Ranger] on normal weekday

I suspected your view may have been correct, but the TPE gripper accepted my Saveaway + GM Rail Ranger without question yesterday.

I think it is only cranks and gricers who ever consider this wheeze anyway, so don't imagine such a combination comes along very often.

Question is now, am I a fare dodger for purchasing a dubious ticket combination, or is it OK because the guard was OK with it?

I had a valid reason for travelling which is slightly less sad than bashing 68s ;)

A Cheshire/Lancashire Day Ranger would have been more than the return ticket I wanted.

That said, it was nice to get my first 68+mk5 and 802 rides. Very impressed with the latter, much less so the former (all the new CAF stock is utter junk IMO).
