Not sure whether this belongs under Railway History & Nostalgia or Infrastructure & Stations, but does anyone know why Park and Miles Platting stations didn't close in 1968 at the same time as Clayton Bridge and Droylsden stations? I believe that when those stations closed Park was reduced to a peak hour only service, though.

My guess would be that there was some industry in the area at that time that still justified keeping Park and Miles Platting open, but this had gone by the time they closed in 1995.

Also, why was Park station just called plain Park rather than Philips Park?

The Co-op Jam factory was at Park - or that’s what my dad told me!

Edit: Googling shows the jam factory to be at Mills Hill. On the Wikipedia page for Park station, some industrial building is visible.

Miles Platting could also be used as an interchange between the Stalybridge and the Oldham / Rochdale lines. Hard to believe now, but the nearby roads were once filled with rows of terraced houses.

I think one of the main reasons could have been the large Mather & Platt engineering works that was in close proximity to both stations, though by the early 1990s I think it was only a shadow of its former self.

I remember reading there were BR offices at one time either on, or adjacent to Miles Platting station.

Maybe there was some internal BR or union influence leading to decision not to close Miles Platting to passengers in 1968. (Doesn't explain Park dodging the bullet though)

In similar vein - I wonder whether the Selnec / GMPTE HQ offices, located a stone's throw away from Ardwick station on Devonshire St North, had any influence on Ardwick retaining regular stopping trains through the day into the 1970/80s, with a generous number calling in both directions during peak hours?

Ardwick was next to the Great Universal Stores admin buildings (still there), a lot of people worked there 30 years ago and used the station for their commute.
Park had many other industries apart from Mather & Platt, for example the Manchester Corporation(?) abattoir though the beasts destined for that place had their own platforms and pens near the station.

I seem to recall that part of Manchester's unsuccessful Olympic Games bid for 2000 would have seen Park station rebuilt and reopened to serve the Olympic Park and what is now Manchester City FC. I have no idea where I got that information from though!
