Is it true that the airline was founded by Coronation Street actor Michael Le Vell?

Sorry, no. IAG set it up themselves in reaction to competition against their main brands from other low cost carriers.

Of course there's also some 321neo flyage to be had to Krakow, and that promises to be fun too.

If you're on the south side of the aircraft, something to look out for is that there's often some Polish Air Force aircraft lined up just to the west of the terminal building... You can see them on Google Earth in satellite mode.

Anyone used Level? Currently looking up flights vs trains and comparing them against both time and money for travelling within Europe.

I know they’re owned by IAG but what are they like compared to say Easyjet

I used Level on a flight from Vienna to Gatwick last year. Departure from Vienna was slightly late but was made up en route. Legroom was good for a budget airline and there was a reasonably priced snack menu. Would fly with them again.

@Peter Mugridge I don't think that @Stuwhu was being entirely serious. :D

You never know these days as quite a few celebrities do set up airlines or charter businesses* and then use elements of their own name in the carrier's name.

*Side story: I once hired a Beech 200 from Jacqueline Gold through her charter company, which not surprisingly was called Gold Air.

Thanks, just having never used them I thought I ask for opinions.

Just returned from Philadelphia where I had my first ever business class flight with BA on 747 upper deck. Sadly my return was in economy, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I flew out on December 27 and it was very quiet - there were no more than 10 of us upstairs and only 5 of us in business between Glasgow and London. Felt a bit annoyed after paying an extortionate amount to reserve my seat, but it was worth it to ensure I was upstairs I guess! I was sat in 64K which was as good as the reviews suggest. Very spacious and you don't have to climb over the person next to you (not that it mattered on this flight.) I even got an hour of rest in the flatbed which was novelty for me. :D I thought the food was pretty average but still better than what you'd get in economy, but the crew were very attentive and more than happy to keep the beers coming.

If anyone else flies out business with BA, I'd highly recommend using the Terminal 5B lounge - it was much quieter than both 5A lounges and I thought it was a nicer area to sit in general. If you have enough time, I'd also recommend the complimentary Elemis spa! By contrast, the Glasgow lounge was nothing special. It was a nice place to relax before the flight, but I would've been just as happy sitting in the main terminal watching the apron.

The return flight was average but maybe it's because I was spoiled from the previous flight! I ended up stuck in a middle seat (my fault for not checking in) which was very cramped for 6′1" me - especially in comparison to the Emirates A380 I flew earlier this year. The crew were fine though.

All in all I felt quite spoiled! It's been by 7th or 8th 747 flight but likely to be my last for a while given that BA are replacing it with the A350 on the Philadelphia route. :'( For that reason, I asked the attendant for a cockpit trip which was a great experience! I took the attached photo when we landed in Philadelphia.

It's less than 60 hours until I'm back in the air on my first 747 to LAX! :D Does anyone here know if it's possible to have a photo next to the LAX sign on the way into the airport? It's silly I know, but it's a bit like that Emirates A380 ad on the roundabout coming into Heathrow, it's just a bit iconic. Just a 'nice to do' if there's time.

It's possible, but very unlikely you'd be able too. It's located in between two highways, so you'd need a car to take you up or walk up to it from West Century Boulevard. If you can get the free shuttle to the Hyatt Regency, Courtyard Marriott (or LAX Marriott), Sheraton or Crowne Plaza hotels then you can walk to the World Way highway entrance and you could get a photo from there, or if you're feeling dangerous you could walk up the highway and get one. Depending on your athletic ability you could climb and walk up the (albeit very narrow) wall that runs next to West Century Boulevard, you could probably get one from West Century Boulevard but it's not the best. I got my Uber driver to just pull up and I ran up the road to grab a photo whilst she waited but not all will be so willing.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

A cab or hotel shuttle is the only way you're going to get across South Sepulveda and to the immediate area. As @ModernRailways states, one of the World Way hotels is the likely the easiest but easy is relative in this case. You can avoid the wall that's mentioned - the concrete median turns into a simple planted section outside the Hilton Homewood Suites a little way down so it'll be easier to cross W Century there. Again, a relative term.

I'll pass in that case, definitely not worth the risk!

Awake earlier than expected, an annoyance of being an early riser, and I've done so much in less than 2 hours, I've even done some weights (part of a revised health improvement scheme I launched a few days ago) and I'm bored! Still 3 hours until the free check-in opens for BA283 tomorrow, oh my good grief how much is time dragging?! I've even prepped sandwiches ready for the trip to London already, I think I'm going to go for a power-walk to help pass some time. Only so much TV one can watch...

Yes I really am excited, my good grief I just want to get on that flight already! Don't forget to keep an eye on #JulianosWorldFrenzy on Twitter for updates during the next couple of weeks, and of course there will be a trip report on techsworldfrenzy.wordpress.com too. I'm going to try and share reports at the end of each day, but we'll see how it goes.

I’ve been offered Bristol as a connecting airport for two flights, any views on the place? Especially as it’s nearly 4hrs there!

It's not bad but quite small - that layover time isn't quite enough to reliably get into the city and back, whilst having a decent amount of time there, so I'd probably recommend heading the direction of the Aspire lounge airside which is a pleasant place to pass the time.

Is that expensive to use?

I use LoungeKey so pay a flat rate of £20 for lounge access - but would imagine it'd be £20-£30 if you pre-book online. If you book direct they do run offers from time to time though.

Just had a look, doesn’t sound too bad considering I don’t expect there to be a spoons there.

The flights are with Easyjet so would I be right in thinking once I leave my luggage at the bag drop at airport 1 then I don’t need to pick it up until airport 3 as I would only be connecting between flights at Bristol.

The other question I have is if my flight is delayed and I miss my train then what? By that I mean fly into a airport to connect into a train.

Was it booked with EasyJet as one booking? If so, bags should be checked through, but double check the bag tag thats printed at the origin airport.

Re the train connection, that'll depend wholly on the policies of the train operator concerned.

I’ve not booked yet but it’s what comes up on Google Flights.

The train connection is with Deutsche Bahn.

Ah, check when you actually go through to make the booking that its on one itinerary then.

DB are like here in the UK, if you book an advance ticket and miss it due to an incoming air connection, you're out of luck unfortunately.

Your excitement is infectious, am excited for you! Will be keeping an eye on your blog once you're back :)

Cheers! Once I updated the backstory part of tomorrow's trip report (I had planned to leave that out but yeah...) time eventually passed. Got 51D so I'm fairly far back, but as long as it's a 747 then that is the primary thing. After all, that's the whole reason for going to LA.

Now at base camp and chilling, trying to relax enough to get some sleep is not going to be easy! Probably could have gone back out for more LU stuff but I really can't be bothered

Less than 15 hours until I board, oh my good grief I can't stop getting excited!

I like Bristol Airport. Incredibly expensive to get to from Hereford, but it's a nice airport. 4 hours isn't too bad, and I'd check Spoons' website to see if there is one there or not, there might well be!

According to Flightradar24, BA283 for 8th January has provisionally been allocated G-BYGF.

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ba283

There is of course no guarantee the aircraft will not be changed.

Enjoy the flight!!

That registration sounds familiar. No idea why, according to Google Images it's not a special livery. Must be one I need for sight then, will look in the morning.

Someone's keeping me awake with his laughing in the dorm, another guy has had enough and told him to shut up so there may well be some sleep soon, wahey!

Alarm set for 0530, planning to be back on LU before 0630, get to Heathrow around 0730 and maximise the spotting opportunities. Of course, I may splash out on a last minute Heathrow Express ticket yet...

Yes I had a flight with Austrian in the summer on one of their 777s from Vienna back to Frankfurt. From what I remember they were perfectly acceptable, in fact my 4 flights in the LH group on that trip were all perfect, indeed I managed to unknowingly book premium economy seats on the LH longhauls without realising! Surprised they even opened the cabin on short haul. We got a piece of cake and a drink on the Austrian 777, crew were pretty friendly from what I remember.

A 777 on Frankfurt to Vienna? Was that a one off?

Seemed to be a regular thing in the summer, think it was a 772 one day and a 763 another day of the week. I linked a few up so I got three wide-bodies in LH group.

It was all part of a crazy two weeks where I did 13 flights in 10 days.
Tue 6 Aug NCL-LHR BA A321
Wed 7 Aug LHR-ZRH BA A320, ZRH-PRG Sichuan A332, PRG-LHR BA A320
Thu 8 Aug LHR-MAD BA A350 new Club suite, MAD-LHR BA B772 (in First!)
Fri 9 Aug LHR-NCL BA A320
Sun 11 Aug train/bus to CWL
Mon 12 Aug CWL-VLY Eastern J41, ferry Holyhead to Dublin, LH A21N DUB-FRA
Tue 13 Aug FRA-VIE LH A346
Wed 14 Aug VIE-FRA OS B772, FRA-DUB LH A343
Thu 15 Aug DUB-EDI Hainan B789

Jeepers that must have cost a fortune! First Class on a 777 must be pretty awesome mind!
It was fairly expensive for a trip away but without recalling the actual cost I would estimate somewhere around £700 for the flights. Obviously more for hotels on top.
They were arranged as a NCL-ZRH/PRG-NCL open jaw return, DUB-VIE return and then the MAD & back was booked on Avios into Club, they often open the First cabin on the 777 for silver/gold card holders (I’m silver). Eastern to Valley was only £20, Sichuan was about £50 and Hainan about the same.

No, easyJet is a point to point airline, they don't offer connections so you would need to collect and check in your baggage at Bristol. If your first flight is late, you would need to sort yourself out for the next leg. There is a company called Kiwi that offer connecting itineraries with easyJet and they cover expenses if you miss flight but judging by reviews I would not recommend them.

Ryanair offers limited connections through a couple of airports mainly in Italy.

EasyJet do sometimes offer connecting flights where both legs are with EasyJey via their EasyJet Worldwide portal - if you use this, your bags will be through-checked and connections guaranteed: https://www.easyjet.com/en/worldwide

If you book both flights separately point-to-point then yes, you'll have to self transfer, with your bags, and your connection won't be guaranteed.
