Are northern willing to let you start short?

I recall they once told passengers from somewhere like Sabdbach they could start short (perhaps @Puffing Devil may recall this?)

Indeed, I did have an email conversation with them in 2017 when they withdrew the Advances from Goostrey (and others). This was their reply (my bold):

Dear PD,

Unfortunately on some lines advance tickets were taken off due to them not being used as much.

However, you will be able to purchase an advance ticket from Crewe to Manchester and get on at Goostrey.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Yours Sincerely,

XX

Customer Solutions Team
Obviously the "not used much" comment is total BS. The permission was valuable, though. Unfortunately, this "loophole" will most likely die along with the Northern Franchise.

I have used advances on this line a few times since, I've never had an issue starting or ending short.

I quite fancy Skipton. Does it have a barrier at all? If not I can't see it being a problem getting off there rather than carrying onto Leeds, bur like has been said, would rather stick to the rules.

There are barriers at Skipton, but all you have to do is ask if it's OK to go off the station, worst that they can do is say no.
If I'm going to Leeds I tend to change trains there to get off a 150 etc on to a 333 etc.

Has anyone got on the Flash Sale site in the last 2 hours?

They aren't from Bradford, which was where the comment about breaking at Skipton came from.
Anyway, it's back on now...

Always feel a bit isolated in the North East when Northern do offers. Missing link to York. Cannot get anything South of Sunderland. Only options are Newcastle to Carlisle and a few options from their. Anyway, Whitehaven in February sounds bracing!

Managed to bag myself 2 returns to Leeds from Chester this morning for 40p at the end of Feb, a bargain that saved me £86.

Could not get Blackpool to Barrow (BIF), booked Preston to Barrow, could not get Blackpool to Preston, bought Blackpool to Liverpool instead. Would that be ok just thinking about Advance ticket restrictions?

Three weeks worth of Calder Valley to Manchester commutes for 20p a pop. Just means getting a slightly earlier train in

Hi mate on your post you say Blackpool on 25th January to ride the trams if you are referring to the heritage tram gold weekend which they usually have last weekend of every month this year they have altered it e.g January’s is 18/19th February’s is 15th 16th
Thanks for that !

As long as your on your booked train what can they say, you don't have to show them your last ticket to show how you got there, you could have just walked onto the station.

You just have to be on your booked train.

Just bagged a return from Earlestown to Leeds for the princely sum of 20p!
I got a couple for sheffield-manchester/sheffield-leeds earlier, 20p each return. I'm happy.

my plan is to do those runs and get a northwest rover for the interim, that means I can bash the 195's,last of the pacers and TPE 68 loco hauled set

Just had a look at Leeds, Carnforth, Grange over Sands. 10p on Thursday 23rd.
Leeds, Carnforth, Silverdale using the same trains but a shorter journey on the same date, the fare is £19.50.

Many thanks for your reply. (Financially there is nothing lost or gained by either party)

I like the sound of "Scarbados" and have also got tickets. 8-)

I expect however that the reality might prove to be a little bit more "bracing!"

Don't forget that, if there's no 10p tickets from your station, the Northern £10 day rover offer is also running from Monday 20 January - Sunday 22 March 2020. Yes, £10 is a lot more than 10p but it's still cheaper than the standard fare in most cases!

Finally established the delay was not due to the software issues.

It was a hardware issue & the correct driver was not available

Yes, there is a barrier but the gate line staff will just wave you through as long as you have a valid ticket.

With the 10p tickets it’s the travelling on an earlier or later service other than the one you are booked onto which causes the most problems from experience.

Thanks for this. I'm hopeful of going up the Settle-Carlisle. I've tickets Lancaster to Leeds and then a connection Leeds to Carlisle, but I'd far rather spend two hours in Skipton (where I've never been) than have forty minutes in central Leeds. No good though if I end up having to spends two hours on Skipton platforms waiting for my connection! Or even worse, a penalty fare for being where I'm not meant to be!

I've bought a ticket Leeds to Skipton also (for 10p why not?) but the timings are all askew. :(
