Haven't seen a Pacer at
Liverpool Lime Street since
27th December !

It would be interesting to have a list of last passenger workings of 142s in key towns and cities. For example, last visits to Leeds, Doncaster, Lincoln, Wakefield, York etc. I suspect most places will be between 20th - 31 Dec 2019 (certainly the case in the north east). Obviously, west of the Pennines & evening runs into Sheffield they are still very much active.

So many 2-car workings on Southport to Alderley Edge this week, a Pacer would've been so ideal to work with a compliant 150 and reduce the workload for the social media team having to reply to complaints from people unable to board at stations along the Atherton line. I see the 07:17 Southport to Alderley Edge most days and it was 4-car some days last week when commuter numbers were lower, yet 2-car this week when everybody's back at work!

Leeds (and therefore Wakefield) will continue to see them on Sheffield stoppers pretty much as long as Sheffield still has them, I'd have thought...

That is of course including 144s- if we're talking just 142s then unless any sneak down the Calder Valley attached to Sprinters we may have already seen the last of them in service there.

142050 + 142039 + 142057 have officially reached the end of the line; they've now arrived at Newport Docks for scrapping. Still to find out which ones are en-route to Kingsbury though I would now believe that some of the lot there have now been dismantled.

Notice it went via west midlands route
and not via Shrewsbury like last weeks move.
Ironic too, that they go under their own power to the scrap yard.
A testament that sees them go with dignity to their fate.
Very sad,and so so wrong!

How is it wrong?! Even the most rose tinted glass wearing of you have to admit these are not fit for purpose in 2020. Happy to see a few preserved, but memories of being bounced around in these things on the likes of the Tyne Valley line for hours aren't good. Whilst I appreciate they changed the face of the railways in the 90s only the die hards will miss them.

Just the same as Steam Locos on their way to the likes of Dai Woodhams scrap yard in Barry back in the 60's.

@Bertie the bus
Just to be clear, I realise that you weren't arguing that modern traction shouldn't be preserved per se; nevertheless, the idea that heritage lines would or should be more or less likely to preserve modern rolling stock according to their size or popularity seems a little ill-conceived.
So you think it is ill conceived that a tourist attraction should base decisions on which trains to operate on how many tourists they will attract?

Just out of interest, who drives the condemned pacers down to places such as EMR Kingsbury or Newport Docks? Surely no drivers who are simultaneously up on route knowledge and traction knowledge down to these areas?

Regarding preservation - generally it's not the preserved railways themselves that actually own the stock. Most locos / DMUs are owned by a separate preservation group who then agree running rights with their host preserved railway (usually offset against the storage costs levied by the preserved railways themselves). So if anyone really wants to preserve a pacer then they need to set up their own group, make an offer to the ROSCO for one and negotiate siding space with a preserved railway!

Out of interest, have you had any responses yet?

I've had one so far and that was from Swanage Railway but because of the third rail at the northern end of the line they wouldn't be able to take a Pacer on.

I've yet to hear back from Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line), Peak Rail, Keighley & Worth Valley, Lincolnshire Wolds Railway and a fair few others. I still think that others need to do the same and contact all heritage railways so to help drum up the appeal that preserving at least one of these Pacers can help open up more event opportunities (such as 80's / 90's weekends) as there is only so much you can do with steam.
