I want to book a ticket from Tutbury and Hatton to Preston. On the outward there is always over an hours wait at Crewe in respect of advance tickets. The train from Tutbury arrives at one minute past the hour and the train from Crewe to Preston is always eight minutes past the hour.
Is there a way of making the change time say 7 minutes so that it avoids a one hour and 7 minute wait.
Thanks.

This isn't possible as the minimum interchange time at Crewe is 10 minutes. You could purchase a combination of tickets, splitting at Crewe but then in the event of a dealy you wouldn't officially be covered.

Same applies if you travelled an hour late from Tutbury on your advance (I assume the train isn't reservable?).
Can you get a ticket via Stoke and Manchester?

On the 6.55 from Tutbury and Hatton or the 7.56 the official connection is met with only a 10 min wait so not always an hour wait.

You only need to be held outside Stoke for a late running cross country for you to miss the connection at Crewe.

Not reservable but presumably the ticket could in theory be rejected as the train isn't an official connection into the booked train northwards from Crewe.

You can do this by either booking a flexible ticket, or if you want Advance tickets, "splitting" tickets at Crewe.

You would have no protection in the event of delays; any entitlement to take later trains or alternative transport (in the event of missing the last train) or obtain Delay Repay compensation would always be based on a valid travel itinerary which confirms to the minimum connection times.
