Caught a Cardiff/Fairwater/Radyr train and noted 5 TfW liveried 170’s (as well as the two loco hauled class37 sets) on the west side of the shed.On leaving Cardiff the Fishguard stopper arrived ,poor b...s,it was a pacer. The quicker the 170’s can be introduced the better.
170272/273/201/202/203/207/208 are the 7 that have been used in service so far, but only 2 to 5 at a time. Of those, at least "273"/"202" have had issues. As for the other 5, "204"/"205"/"206" will be 3 of the 5 doing nothing in the yard, "270" has gone to Tyseley workshop again, and "271" is still with Greater Anglia until March/April.

By the way, I saw this the other day:

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/transport-for-wales-trains-cancel-17450828.amp

I appreciate that it's from a few weeks ago, but it contains a video of one of the 170s having problems with its external passenger doors not opening at Pye Corner, and features an on-train announcement informing passengers that maintainance control have been contacted. Does anyone know which unit it is...?

As well as service disruptions, there have been issues with the new Class 170 trains recently bought on line by TfW to help ease capacity issues .

Inherited from Greater Anglia, the refurbished Class 170 carriages are intended to increase capacity on the valleys lines during peak times and provide space for up to 6,500 more commuters every week.

But on Thursday, one of the first trains to come into service was forced to wait on the platform for nearly five minutes after the doors got jammed shut and could not be opened.

One passenger on board the Cardiff to Ebbw Vale service, who did not want to be named, said he could only watch from inside as train crews desperately tried pressing all the buttons to open the doors. He said the doors did open in the end but he claimed it was not the first time it had happened.

So, why are 5 170’s still sitting at the Canton depot doing nothing?

MOT Lol.

I just can't seem to get excited about the ex GA 170s even though I need most of them for haulage.
I'll be in Cardiff for a couple of days next month so will try and sample some if they are out working.
See what all the fuss is about lol.
Will be strange seeing electric trains too now all the wires are up.

It will be interesting to see how 170s fair in Wales where most lines are perhaps "non too fast".
Northern introduced them on the 60mph max Harrogate loop and there were rumours of vast fuel and oil consumption. Most likely due to the line speed being lower than the 2nd (direct) gear change speed meaning the units run permanently in 1st (low hydraulic) gear.
Also being quite heavy with 100mph gearing they were much slower accelerating than previous.

I found the seating surprisingly comfortable compared to the ironing boards on most new trains.Has anybody tried a Cheltenham - Bridgend to try them over a long journey?

I saw 170207 at Pye Corner today. It was sat there for a good 90 seconds to 2 minutes before the doors opened and people could get out. Even the driver /guard briefly stepped out to see what was happening.

Does anybody know if and when a 170 would be coming near Cheltenham or Gloucester today please?

Thanks in advance.

They tend to be Pacers on a Sunday but there won't be any trains until evening due to Engineering Work

Thanks for the information, I won't waste my time with a trip to see them there then!
170273 and 170201 were doing the Cheltenhams yesterday, so in terms of weekends Saturday is the day.

Thanks, I'll try and pop down there next week or the one after then!
Welcome :) I still need to get a ride on one :p

As 5-6 TfW 170s were in service yesterday (170272 in the early morning only and 170273/201/202/203/207 all day) and long-delivered 170204/206 weren't (170205 was only delivered the other day, 170270 was only re-delivered yesterday afternoon and GA still have 170271), I wonder what the daily allocation will be once all 12 have long been delivered and running reliably - 10-11...? or would there not be enough diagrams for that many to run on their current routes...?

Especially interesting to know that 170204 was used on Friday!

Anyone know the reliability of these units at Greater Anglia? All I hear is problems since they have been with TFW ....
*Engines shutting down and not restarting with portable head/ tail lights being used
* saloon lights going out intermittently
* not being able to open doors at stations

Change-up is about 70mph, so prolonged use at slower than that is certainly going to push up the fuel consumption

Do these units still have the first class sections intact or have they been re-seated now?
They still have "first class". Think the 2-cars have the 9-seater cabins and the 3-cars have the 7-seater cabins.

They were excellent trains when GA had them and are sorely missed
You can have the same number of flirts if we can have them back
