In connection with the £30 First Class Return offer on EMR, I was wondering which EMR services have the best food?

The EMR first class offer is not very generous. Most food must be paid for, even in first. There may be a couple of southbound inter-city services that have breakfast but that's as good as it gets. Even a free glass of wine is restricted to certain weekday afternoon peak services out of London.

Given the price sometimes available for first, I've always found the food options on the weekday HST services very good for the cost. Rather pay for something substantial than rely on a complementary offer.

What is this £30 First Class return offer you speak of? Is it the weekend upgrade, or something entirely different?

I have always found EMT/EMR food in First on weekdays to be of decent quality for the price.

On Saturdays only the very few breakfast trains offer proper food. For the rest of the day, and all day Sunday, a complimentary packet of biscuits which you have to collect from the buffet is about your lot.

See the Special Offers thread - it's targeted by email

Just wanted to say thank you for the tip-off. I scoured my emails and I've just booked a £30 First Class return for the end of the month. Thank you!!

If anyone was to do First Class at the weekends, I would recommend the 07:37 from Sheffield if you're not in a rush - just shy of 3 hours on an HST, it's never that busy as there's a more direct service minutes before it, and of course the longer journey means you get more for your money and you can get the fry up while it's still fresh.

Is there actual first class specific food, that standard ticket holders aren't allowed to buy?

Whether they would actually refuse to sell it I can't say, but it certainly isn't advertised on the standard class trolley 'menu'.

Yes. Standard class catering is outsourced while first class is dealt with internally and therefore consists of 2 completely separate menus and price lists. When the standard class catering hasn't turned up I have heard some TMs make it extremely clear that standard class passengers would not be permitted to purchase anything from the first class catering over the tannoy and I think I have witnessed a standard class passenger wanting to buy water refused during the EMT days.

Didn't even know EMR offered such a service in First Class.
Indeed. The current EMR menu has less choice but is still reasonably priced.
Having had an extremely grim bowl of pasta and meatballs on a trip a little while ago, I think the price is the only thing reasonable about the service.

It was the train manager who came around and took payment for the bill in the end, which struck me as odd, but the subsequent mention that first and standard catering are handled separately goes some way to explaining that.

Sounds like standards might have started to drop then - I have not had a meal on board since before Christmas.
Hopefully the OP will give their views once they have travelled.
