I was due to travel with Northern from Workington to Manchester Airport via Barrow in Furness. My journey had me arriving at 14:41 into BIF changing for the direct 14:46 to MIA.

My mobile tickets are an an anytime return from BIF and an advance single from BIF-MIA. Two tickets. The connection time meets the minimum and the journey is valid.

Due to the WKG-BIF train running 15 means late my 5 minute connection is impossible. Northern Customer Services advised me to travel via Carlisle and speak to the guards/train managers. The soonest connection is Northern to Carlisle, Avanti to Preston then Northern to Manchester Airport.

The Guard on this Northern train advises me that he doesn’t feel it’s likely that Avanti will accept my ticket which would be bad news. If I had continued to travel via Barrow the next service would have me arriving under the two hour check-in time and there is already a lot of disruption in the Manchester area.

What do you advise? Will Avanti staff at Carlisle be able to give me a document valid to travel? I may not have enough time to visit the ticket office.

Avanti have replied to a message on Twitter saying there is no ticket acceptance and I would need to speak to the station staff.

You aren't entitled to use Avanti, with Advances it's the next train of the same TOC unless there is acceptance or you would be stranded overnight. As it's for a flight I would buy a new ticket and claim a refund for the original, or on your travel insurance if applicable.

What is the flight by the way? A two hour cut off is rare.

Do you have have written confirmation from Northern Customer Service that your ticket is valid that way?

No I do not. I was told that on the phone to their Customer Services.

Of course I know they would wash their hands of me and the ridiculousness of our franchise system is evident that the pax is at fault for their own service failures. Which are very numerous at the moment by the way.

That aside. The Guard mention he thought TPE might accept my ticket, but “definitely not Avanti”.

If it were me, and the flight was important, I’d travel to the airport by the fastest route possible. If necessary I’d purchase a ticket on the Avanti train (the most they can charge is an Anytime single) and then sort it all out on my return from holiday.

TPE and Northern have blanket mutual ticket acceptance today so that wouldn't be an issue, but that obviously doesn't help you with Avanti.

I received a message on Twitter saying that TPE would accept my Northern ticket. While writing, I see the message above. Thank you.

I’m not without a gift of the gab, I’ll see if the Avanti TM will accept me before I get on the train otherwise wait for the later TPE.

An off peak single to Preston valid on Avanti is only £20ish meaning I could even buy it for any train and on my phone for an e-ticket. I feel confident I could get that back from Northern ( or via MCOL...)

I think its good to post an update:

I was able to get onto AWC, I was ready to purchase a ticket but before I could even open my mouth the TM said its fine.
