Manchester Victoria but alight at Piccadilly?

Using Trainscanbecheaper, when I set the destination to "Manchester Piccadilly, Victoria, Oxford Road or Deansgate" it is finding significantly cheaper fares than alighting at Victoria than Piccadilly. The difference is double the fare.

As I am not familiar with Manchester, does it mean that there is no Manchester fare zone? and my Cumbria to Manchester Victoria ticket would not let me alight at Piccadilly as the ticket would be refused and potentially be subject to excess at the barrier?

Is it the same ticket, or is the ticket to Victoria limited to using just, say, Northern?

Are these walk-up fares or Advances? It might be that you are getting cheaper Advances that don't involve connecting onto what are very busy trains around the Ordsall Chord and may not have the cheaper quota.

Walk-up fares are all (so far as I know) valid to any of the four stations.

Here we go:

Maryport to Manchester Piccadilly, Victoria, Oxford Road or Deansgate
Advance Single (V2V) £25.00
  • Only valid on booked Avanti West Coast services and required connecting services.
  • Restriction VR applies - click for details

Ah, I see. The "connections" bit will likely only be coming up as Northern services which don't have an Advance quota (or have the relevant quota level with space in it), which I suspect may only be the Blackpool to Victoria EMU. It then won't give you a journey round the Ordsall Chord to Picc as that has an Advance quota which is likely very full as those trains are very busy.

The tram isn't expensive, just take that to Picc from Vic.

Can you specify the dates and times you’re looking at please? It would help us to be able to reconstruct the itinerary.

Therefore I would need a separate Victoria to Piccadilly ticket if I would like to alight there?

If you wish to use the Ordsall Chord services around to Picc from Vic, yes, I think so. But I would use the tram, it's more frequent and not really any slower.

I wonder if it might be possible to force a change at Bolton or Salford Crescent onto a non-quota Northern service to Picc.

27 MAR. 15:05 from MRY, arriving MCV 18:59. Changing at CAR and PRE.
Thanks. I can’t seem to match that entirely, but I do see a fare of £19.50 with changes at Carlisle and Wigan (cross the road between WGN/WGW) arriving Manchester Piccadilly 18:36.

Thank you, I will consider that. This fare I found is only £12.50, so if the MCV-MAN is just a few quid then it would be better for my pocket.

With a different ticket? I suppose as long as you get the named AWC services the connections won't matter to the guard/inspectors as long as it is terminating at MAN and not MCV.

Free bus from Victoria to Piccadilly, see https://tfgm.com/public-transport/bus/free-bus, Route 3 is direct for you.

Excellent.

Depending on your mobility it's not far to walk, Manchester city centre is very compact.

The tram fare is only £1.40, by the way.

Thank you

I guess I'll just buy what I've found and walk/take the free bus or pay the £1.40. But I'll hang fire in case someone finds a way to put MAN as the terminus on this ticket!

Thank you all again.

I'm not sure that's strictly true in terms of reservable vs. non-reservable services. Most Northern services are reservable in the sense of having Advance quotas.

Apologies, they've changed the routes since I last used them, Route 3 is only in evenings, Route 2 goes a longer way but is still a door-to-door service from Victoria to Piccadilly for nothing if you don't want to walk.

Or, at least, be aware of them both since you're arriving around 7pm when one service stops and another one starts ......

Depending on your age you could look at the Northern 55 ticket £15 anywhere on the west side of the Northern network, but you would have to go via Barrow.
