Hi All,

Mk 1 and 2 coaches all had a variant that included a corridor version. Did any of the Mk 3 coaches include this option. Or indeed a brake version.

I know of a Mk 3 variant that had a corridor version, but I can't think of a brake. Edinburgh > Glasgow push pulls maybe?

S Yorks, usually
Side corridor compartments - not in the hauled Mk3s or those in HSTs. But the Bournemouth line Cl. 442 EMUs, a Mk3 derivative, yes.

Brake versions - there were three BFOs (Brake First Open) Mk3 hauled coaches, plus all the HST TGS coaches (Trailer Guard Second/Standard).

Is that it?

The Sleeper variants also had corridors, of course.

And weren't the IE Mk 3 generator vans also brake vehicles?

The HST TGS is not a brake, though. “Brake” refers to provision of parking/handbrake equipment and an HST TGS doesn’t have it.

Yes, effectively Mk3 versions of Mk1 full brakes bit with two big chunky generators

The E&G push-pulls used Mk2f DBSO converted from Mk2f BSO. They were equipped with disc-brakes with Girling WSP equipment and a 1/3-width cab with gangway fitted with a standard EMU 4-notch power controller which controller the propelling loco via a two-wire FDM control system.

There are the Mk3b DVT, I assume they count as brakes?

Corridor Mk3s - all Irish ones were open design, BR day coaches and HST trailers all open, Sleepers were corridor as were the Mk3-design Class 442 DTFsoL which had six 6-seater first class compartments.

When the HSTs were being designed an early plan had one of the two first class trailers as a compartment vehicle, but this never made it off the drawing board.

Were there any 2nd Mk2 Corridors?

Only former Firsts declassified, and some compartments in the five Mk2c First Corridors which the Scottish Region partially declassified (4 out of 7 compartments became second class) in the mid-1980s for use in Inverness trains. No second class corridor Mk2s were built as new and that applies to Irish and Northern Irish Mk2s as well.

There were also air conditioned Mk2D side corridor coaches with first class compartments.

I think they were the last BR hauled coaches to have them, with the Mk3-derived 442s being the last altogether on BR to have compartments (save for sleeper stock, obviously!)

I would love to see modern stock have a few compartments in Standard (as “family compartments” like DB) and First.

The main build of Mark 3 "brake" vehicles were the Driving Van Trailers.

Meanwhile the Mark 2 build had no sleeper carriages, and other than 8 Pullman Kitchens, almost no catering vehicles.

Not in the GB build, but new-build Mk2 catering vehicles were produced for both Northern Ireland Railways (Mk2B) and Córas Iompair Éireann (Mk2D) in their respective orders.
