What worried me was that if I risked the Avanti in the event of a cancellation, and they made me buy a new ticket on board, I would be £46.85 down, and that's if they allow railcard discount, while I would only be able to claim £11.55 back from TPE. Better to hedge my bets and buy an Advance Avanti now.

What a shambles. I am surprised it has been allowed to go on as long as this.

Buy the Avanti ticket and whack TPE in the pocket...

That's what I will do if the TPE is cancelled. Even if it isn't I'll still take the Avanti, having read the horror stories about TPE's overcrowding. Besides, I booked an earlier departure and will get back about two hours sooner, so win win.

One thing is for sure, I will be using Advanced Options (no relation to Advance tickets lol) on Trainsplit in future, to exclude TPE!

Woke up from a dream in which an Angel said he would grant me a wish... I said Newcastle United to win the Premier League... ok then, TPE to run a full Saturday service.
He turned to me and said which game is Jamal lifting the trophy at?
Happy New Year.

I have bought a Northern & Avanti return from Manchester to Edinburgh. The flexible fare just over £62 was cheaper for the approximate times I wanted than 2 TPE Advance Singles.

The reason for this, of course, is that the TPE services are heavily overcrowded due to being too short. With the coming of Nova 2s, I'd imagine more Advances will become available.

350: 80m
185: 69m
397: 120m - a big increase on both

Even if Avanti were operating both it would make sense to do this. From Euston there are often cheaper Advances on the services via Birmingham than the Trent Valley due to those being generally quieter, for instance.

There's also the matter that so many people prioritise through service when available.

Our son travelled Euston to Carlisle a few months ago on a Friday morning. He booked an Advance via Birmingham as was £25 cheaper and the hour longer did not matter to him as he did some work on the train.
He bid online for a first class upgrade and got one cheap at 30 mins to go.
The first class carriage he travelled in was almost full with most passengers working and the carriage did not start emptying until Warrington.

Currently on a 185 between Preston and Lancaster, ex-MIA. Can confirm - very busy, and the 397 staring at us from the sidings was not nice to look at

Sometimes i see Glasgow to London advances that are on the via Brum services but with a change at Crewe.

Ultimately I think the main issue with TPE Anglo-Scot services at present is that 4 out of 10 350's have gone to LNWR and despite having accepted the majority of 397's, there are ongoing reliability issues with them. Couple this with the training issues due to late delivery etc and it doesn't look to great.

I didn’t know TPE did a variation of Seatfrog. They keep that quiet!

1S81 1707 from Man Airport to Glasgow was a 185 today. Terminated at Carlisle (no guard according to RTT)

Once again on the 10:06 out of Preston. Today it's a LNWR 350 undergoing an identity crisis. There's a few 397s dotted around Preston and evidently this 350 won't be around forever.

Did you catch the unit number? Have recently seen 407 and heard 403 is in LNWR livery, 402 and 409 still in TPE livery.

Thank you! Also got a ride on 403 yesterday.

More delays today, and with the 41 unviable for the immediate future, commuting has become a nightmare.

I live next to the Manchester-Preston line.
What's the problem with the 397s?
Before Christmas, I was seeing lots of 397s passing by, but don't think I've seen one in weeks & weeks now. Nearly all TPE trains have been 4-coach 350s in LNWR livery.
They're put to shame by Northern, whose trains are now usually 6-coach 331s.

There's 2 daily diagrams allocated to 397s. Rest are in Preston croft Street, Longsight, etc for training/just in storage.

There has never been more than two daily 397 diagrams, which is still the case and will be shortly increasing to three.
Not all 397's have been accepted yet and there have been numerous issues that have been reported to CAF.
Northern 331's were always due to be in service before TPE 397's, plus the TPE focus has been to get 802's into service with 11 daily diagrams in the train plan which is set to increase to 13 shortly.

That's what I was thinking. Very early days with limited use still of course.
