Because Northern have declared it a Penalty Fare area and customers have therefore had an opportunity to buy even if paying cash or otherwise unable to use the TVM.
.
It's not that because Northern guards acted like this long before they had penalty fare areas.

Well said. ;)

Joking aside, Captain Haddock, wouldn't you get annoyed if Conductors just sat in the back cab between stations and never appeared through the train?

Putting revenue aside, surely it's also good for passengers to have a visible member of staff who can help them, regardless of whether they want advice on tickets/times/where to change trains etc.?

Also potentially a visible deterrent to anyone behaving anti socially.
Absolutely. I get very annoyed at it, especially when some of their colleagues work their trains diligently.

On my morning commute to Leeds the vast majority of passengers are regular commuters travelling to either Wakefield Kirkgate or Leeds, both of which have barrier checks so there really is no need for a check on the train.

Kirkgate has barriers now?

Kirkgate has the yellow coat army out at the entrance now and again

On Northern you get a completely random mix of checks, from those not bothering at all, those just asking if anyone needs tickets, those that do a very brief glance at tickets to the extent you could probably get away with presenting a bit of orange card written on with a Sharpie pen and on the odd occassion you find a very switched on guard who will even go as far as seeing you have for example a West Yorkshire zones season ticket and ask you what station you are alighting at!

Apologies if anyone assumes that I was pointing the finger at everyone.

I meant to be more concise and just like the person above has referenced a certain individual.

I see numerous individuals on my morning commute, who when asked to show there tickets buy one from the guard. However, if said guard only asks for people wanting to buy tickets then guess what happens, they remain quiet and get a free ride.

Conductors are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't - if they don't try and achieve a full train walk then commuters who need a ticket to exit via a barrier are upset. If they check every ticket on a morning train, chances are some people who want to purchase won't be seen. The people who try and avoid a fare will always try and avoid no matter how hard the conductors work - sitting at the front being of course a favourite.

Cynical but true - get the early trains when not all ticket offices are open and take the percentage, and cash in to the ticket office (the main one) - at least one guard down my way used to do that some 30 years ago - take the early shift and take the money. Why not? Early start and finish, BRSA lunchtime - great!
BRSA ??? Railway club !!! Or the Isambard Brunel/latterly Reckless Engineer in Bristol in my day. Funny the "BR" doctor as was was over the pub ! Many a medical ended with a pint there.....
