A 3 car 101 beats a 120 on hills - hmm Comfort but grossly underpowered with same engines but longer and heavier (steel rather than aluminium). Non of them beat my favourite dmu the Rolls Royce powered Class 110 calder valley units. Thread getting off topic.

Yes, they were definitely slower than a class 101 at pulling away. Worth it tho.

The line is being spoilt today... a 5 car 222 on the 1507 Crewe to Derby...seen the 4 cars on there but never a 5.

222007 was the unit. Had it on the 1642 and a lot of people were confused at Derby (expecting the normal doggy). For once everyone had a seat, even the rear coach was empty.

Unless there is a dispensation, Class 153s are not, because of PRM-TSI, allowed to work alone any more[1]. So this is indeed permanent.
Transport for Wales have several compliant one car class 153 units, which certainly do work alone.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, mind. Simply that it has been done.

Currently on 156406 15:07 Crewe to Derby. Stirred some interest as saw people on the platforms at Longton and Blythe Bridge photographing/videoing the train.

It's a two-carriage train, so people are interested as it's so unusual.

If it was pulled by Mallard it wouldn't be any more noteworthy. ;)

A lot of the stock used on the Crewe to Derby Line seems to only have recently arrived with East Midlands Railway as the interiors and some exteriors are in colours of operators other than East Midlands Railway/East Midlands Trains. I have seen some First Great Western interiors and I think some Greater Anglia exteriors.

Considering that 40+ years ago when my wife and I were users of that service, heading to Derby from Glasgow, it was a busy two coach train....

Surely, 40+ years ago it would have been a 3-car class 120.

I started using the route in the mid 1960s, and at that time trains were formed of 3-car 104s or 105s; these were replaced by 120s in about 1970, and 2-car sets didn't take over until Etches Park got the 150/1s in the late 1980s.

I've so far seen one 156 in a mostly off white livery with purple ends which swoop upwards to roof level.

Is this to be the livery for all EMRs 156s

Eventually only the ex GA 156s. Some are currently in plain white with red doors.

More like grubby white with badly removed remnants of the Greater Anglia name and dull red doors. They're lovely inside though and 2 carriages are always welcome on the Crewe to Derby route. Although this week all I've seen so far are EMR 153s with 2 carriages.

So only the ex-Anglia 156s will receive purple and white livery, the ex-EMT ones will retain the mostly blue colour?

Hopefully we will never see a 153 again on the Matlock branch, which was a very unwelcome feature especially on a Saturday when Derby County were at home.

In theory not on it's own. They go up there most if not every day hooked on to something else though.

Relating tangentially to the title of this thread today 222102 made several Derby - Crewe trips today, presumably due to stock dislocation following the Long Eaton floods-

Still haven't managed a 156, never mind the first class section on a Meridian. Double 153 every time this year so far.

I've been on original EMR 156s and the Greater Anglia 156s on Crewe to Derby this year. Plus a 4 carriage Meridian and EMR 158s. A few double 153s. Just needed an Hst to top it off.

The ex-Anglia sets are welcome if only for the fact that they are two cars replacing former one car workings.

However, the legroom in them seems very tight, no better than a 153, plus, there are no folding seat back tables.

Well, you've right spoiled my night now. I was looking forward to the 156's as I was led to believe they had more tables and better legroom elsewhere. The 153's themselves are variable though in terms of legroom.

I'd say the greater anglia 156s have more tables. Here's an interior photo I took a few weeks ago. Might need to zoom in to see the tables. A long overdue slight improvement for the Crewe to Derby route.
