Just witnessed a Northern service call at this seldom-used platform for the second time in as many weeks. On both occasions, both passengers and the guard were surprised to arrive, with both expecting to be at platform three which is on the opposite side. There doesn't appear to be any reason for this use, as on both occasions there was little if any disruption on the route. The guard on today's service said it was the first time in 5 years that he'd used the platform.

Does anyone in the know know the reason (if any) for these moves? They were at similar times of day but the first was on a Monday so I assume it isn't required for crew knowledge.

Any thoughts?

No need to call for route knowledge.

Most likely a fault on the Up, so easier to send services all up the through road.

Before the May 2018 TT change, we were told to challenge the route offered at Mirfield East Jct. But not anymore.

According to RTT one service per day is booked to call at platform 2

On Mon-Sat this is the 18:40 to Wigan Wallgate, which I suspect is because the 18:43 Grand Central from Kings Cross is 3 minutes behind on platform 3 (cancelled in advance today though).

On Sunday (if there aren't engineering works) the 21:10 to Huddersfield is booked to call at platform 2, and similarly has a Grand Central path two minutes behind in platform 3 (which seems to be subject to planned cancellations over the next couple of months).
