I would think that being a Local Authority owned company that it would be unlikely to close without notice. The politics would surely get in the way, however, it may announce a proposed closure or sale, which I think would be more likely.

Whatever the outcome, if this ever takes place it would appear to signal curtains for Halton. The vultures will be circling!

There are plenty of very reputable small operators too. However, the issues at Halton are well known given that they have recorded substantial losses over the last few years and only minimal profits before that, hence the rather antiquated fleet that they now operate.
It really does highlight that whilst people rightly laud Reading, Lothian and Nottingham, the majority of council owned fleets are (and have been for a while - see Rosso, Islwyn, Chester) been massively under-resourced.

That is indeed true to be fair, though I find most disreputable bus companies to be small ones.
A well-maintained old fleet should be fine - the trouble is if they don't maintain it.
There's plenty of big ones out there as well though I won't name names...

The problem being that older fleets demand more maintenance and so the risk of maintenance issues being a problem increases.

Very true. In fact apart from Reading, Lothian, Nottingham, as mentioned by TGW, a lot of the remainder are not at all healthy. If you have a spare 20 minutes, just look on the Conpanies House website at the most recent published accounts for....er..... pretty much any of the others. Even Reading isn’t great financially. It’s true their shareholders may not want a dividend - but ultimately continual losses mean they can’t invest in their fleets, staff, premises, etc etc.... But being a bus operator of any sort is not easy currently- problems are not unique to the likes of First or Arriva!

It seems surprising, if true, that nothing has been announced. People will get up in the morning for their bus to work and find it simply doesn't show up.

As I said on another forum, nothing has been said officially, and so on that basis, we have to assume Halton is continuing to trade tomorrow.

I'd think that, so long as the company has not been declared insolvent and/or insurance cover hasn't been withdrawn, operations will continue for the present.
I have heard from both Arriva and Stagecoach Employee's that both operators are ready to step in should Halton close. Might be worth looking on the company house website at Halton Transports finances, I am no expect but that does not look amazing from what i see.
Another one about an Operator closing down, Normally there is only a public announcement when the firm actually shuts giving people no warning at all.

I couldnt imagine Halton announcing to their staff that they were closing at the end of the days shift.
Most staff would probably walk out anyway!

I got to drive 36 DE53 USG around Gilmoss depot a few weeks ago.
It was a bag of rubbish lol.

Not as far as I'm aware, it came from some very senior people in the industry who are generally very careful to be accurate. I see that there's an extraordinary council meeting called for Wednesday, which appears to be just transport related.

Big issue with Halton is most of their routes especially in Halton area are mostly covered by Arriva, & the Halton routes that don't have a competitor are routes that other operators don't want, then there's the school routes that Halton operate in Halton/Liverpool & St Helens
