With the Crossrail delay announcement, any update on replacing the 315s by shortened 345s

I assume many of them are going to need major maintenance if they were kept another 2 years, and any cost of removing and storing 2 cars of some more 345s must be negligible in comparison to work on 315s. Surely when the 345s were sold and leased back rental payments would start so why pay rental on these and pay to maintain the 315s at same time

I would have thought withdrawals would speed up now to complete changeover
with those in best condition (perhaps that should be less bad condition) covering on the West Anglia services instead of their worse ones seems likely.

One caveat is not yet clear on the Liverpool Street platform lengthening, and some would have been kept to cover Liverpool Street peak extras around the transition. However it now seems that even when the tunnel section opens may be a phased opening of connecting to it both ends. Not sure if Liverpool Street (platform 16-18) gets sorted during this phasing
I suspect what's been happening at LO may end up happening in reverse - as 710s finally start to withdraw the 317s and 315s, once enough units have been withdrawn, some can come back over to the GE side to displace any of the TfL Rail units that need prohibitively expensive work.

With a decent pile of spare parts from those scrapped to keep them going.

Nice to see warm runs today going ahead, I was trackside at Wolverton when I got to see them screaming past.

Is everyone following aware of the 315 preservation society page set up on Facebook? With plans in place to preserve a unit. Worth looking at..

Will the LO/TfL Rail 315s still be in service come April? I’ll be back in London on April 6th and again on the 16th so I’m hoping to get one last shot on a 315

Certainly will. The LO ones will eventually go first when the 710s take hold, but a few remain on the Shenfield route for a while yet.

News to me but then I’m not a Facebooker. Where do they propose to park it?

Excellente. Didn’t manage to get a LO set on my last visit but I did get a shot on 315820 + 315819 from Liverpool Street to Stratford which was brilliant :)

But the TFL ones on the Shenfield line are only used during weekday peaks so I would've thought they go from there first but some as I understand will replace LO ones on Lea Valley services until sufficient 710's are delivered.

315804 is now making its one way trip behind 37800 to Newport Docks for scrapping. First of the ‘angry eye’ headlight ones to be scrapped too.

Tbh I am very sad to see 804 go as this was the first 315 I got to go on back in July 2015. Went on it from Seven Sisters to Hackney Downs and must say I enjoyed the journey on it!
Shame really, I thought since they had the C6 upgrades that they would be some of the last the go

Some of the TfL Rail 315s have been transferred to LO to allow them to replace some of their own 315s, presumably those in worse condition. From what I understand, once the Class 710s have been fully introduced on LO, some of the TfL Rail 315s might be transferred back to TfL Rail to allow for the Class 345s to be lengthened.

That is not strictly true. They run all day on weekdays. The off peak service to Shenfield requires 11 trains. Four of them are pairs of 315s between the peaks.

All about money unfortunately. The cost of leasing 315‘s is substantially higher than 317s which is why the 317s will be the very last to be removed. Because it’s cheaper.

Let's not forget that most of the other PEP classes have already celebrated their 40th year since entering service, Southern's 313s could well make it to 45 years;
313: Aug 1976 -May 1979
507: May 1978 - Dec 1981
314: Oct 1979 - Dec 1979
508: Dec 1979 - Aug 1980.
315: Dec 1980 - Dec 1981.

What's going to happen to the 317s after London overground and 315s after tfl rail?

No further use planned at present. So it’s a case of store or scrap. I suspect some units could get stored, especially any of the ex GA PRM units, but unless some of further use emerges I can’t see these being stored indefinitely.

The same is going to apply to the 321s in time, again unless some kind of use emerges.

Why didn't TfL already withdraw all the 315s from the ECML? They clearly have the 345's in storage at Old Oak. And if they have a business reason, won't they end up with huge milage differences and therefore huge maintainance differences between their 345's that have only just been accepted into service and the 345s that have run lots of diagrams on ECML and GWML already?

I assume you mean GEML as opposed to the ECML?

315s will remain on the Eastern side until the 345s are lengthened to 9 cars & Liverpool Street platforms are extended. Not sure when said platform works commence though.

Platform works were supposed to commence after Crossrail opens. So your guess is as good as mine.

The 315s at Northampton still make outings to Milton Keynes and back presumably as part of the warm storage.
Here they are back at Northampton just after 0900 yesterday - a morning when peak trains were delayed due to 'congestion'.

Is that the pair of units that are currently reported on Wikipedia as being in storage?

Indeed; the rear one was '833.

They'd just returned from the 08.48 Northampton Up Sidings to Northampton Up Sidings, to Milton Keynes Central and back.

Any 315s due for withdrawal and disposal soon? No scrap moves have taken place since 804’s final departure last month
