Alway nervous about posting this kind of thing in case I have found a loophole and LNER staff will fix if. However the LNER booking engine has got an option to pick where you change trains.

I have noticed on journeys between Market Rasen and Welwyn Garden City that if I select change at Lincoln I get offered cheaper fare then changing at Newark.

This journey uses the same trains. Is this a promotion to encourage people to travel from Lincoln and because my change is at Newark it picks from the Newark fare basket? Why is Newark the default changing point when it doesn’t actually matter but people would prefer to be on the LNER rather than the 153?

(Hopefully this isn’t a mistake and people from Lincoln will be sticking pins in me as their price goes up)

Just for clarity the EMR services run Market Rasen - Newark Northgate. LNER follow Lincoln - Newark Northgate - London. So it make no difference to time which operator you use between Lincoln and Newark it is just where you change.

In the timetable data that journey planners and booking engines use, Lincoln is a small interchange station whereas Newark North Gate is a medium interchange station. So under the RDG code of practice they must make you change at Newark even though it would be much more logical to change onto the LNER train at its origin.

As regards your question, it could possibly be a special promotion from Lincoln but it could also be that East Midlands Railway are preventing the cheaper LNER fares being offered if y ou spend longer on their train. I can't see any problem with you always changing at Lincoln.

Various weekday dates in February. Not an issue, but if you let the booking engine do it’s default thing you get a more expensive fare by changing at Newark rather then Lincoln. I only found out by accident as I prefer changing at Lincoln, less time on a 153.

thanks. Happy the booking engine has the feature to be honest. Would happily pay slightly more to spend less time on a 153 but as it is cheaper we are on a win / win.

but it is great we can chose to change at York rather than Peterborough now.

all that is needed now is bike reservations.

Can't see where the option arises in the LNER site?

Never mind that have you seen the new app
Just looked, nicely done but doesn't do it for me on a phone as it feels too like a responsive version of the website rather than truly being optimised for my phone. Quite excited by season ticket option, but not by seeing a £7.50 delivery charge added.

Because that's what it is, sadly (on Android anyway). Rather lazy on the part of LNER when every other TOC manages to have a proper app.
