43239 and 43208 moved under their own power from Ely to Eastleigh on 8 January for warm storage.

Not 100% sure on the point of this thread but I will add that I read on this forum that there was a rumour about those two power cars going to cross country.

There are threads on LNER HST withdrawals and transfer of some of the former LNER sets to MML. I thought we could use a thread for the remaining former LNER HSTs going for other use.

CrossCountry??? I presume if this is the case that it would be to help out with maintenance with the XC power cars if that makes sense.

Apparently 43208 and 43239 are at Eastleigh to be repainted into XC livery.
100% correct. 43208 & 43239 are to be allocated to the XC HST pool, which will give them 12 power cars to operate the 5 sets. As I understand it, I don't think XC are getting another rake of mk III's but XC are considering operating 6 car formations instead of 7.

In the short term, it should at least offer some much needed flexibility in the fleet.

very nervous about making the rest of the HST fleet shorter, but assume the conversion of any of the now surplus "spare" ex LNER coaches to have automatic doors is out of the question

They're already operating six car sets.

It’s one HST set and only because of a defective TS, and the spare vehicles are at Wabtec for overhaul. It isn’t planned.

I passed Ely this afternoon. One of the BR blue power cars was stood with a cab door open and uncoupled from any stock, and there appeared to be some shunting going on. The trailers are in mixed lines with ex LNER and GWR vehicles marshalled together. They are not being stored as the sets in which they arrived.

There seems to be regular shunting going on at Ely at the moment, with stock for ScotRail both arriving and leaving. It's reckoned / likely that there will be more stock for GWR as well, taking the standard class TS & TGSs and whatever possible outcome for Cross Country as well. Some interesting times ahead.

There are currently no plans for additional Castle vehicles in the GWR fleet, but there may be an increased requirement in the post-DA3* world. I expect we'll know within the month.

*DA3 - or Direct Award 3 - is the shortcut name for the direct franchise award that GWR is currently negotiating with DfT. It is a brand new franchise agreement rather than an extension of the current direct award.

Simply a stock move, returning to Ely with a few Mk3s tomorrow. Probably used as the most recent pair of Power Cars to arrive.
Presumably the four TS being removed from the sets going to EMR.

Using these power cars also saves Angel from hiring in a loco and barriers for the move. The latest arrivals are less likely to have lost their coolant since arriving, which may explain their use.

More than likely, locos with silicone hoses in them don't like to be sat around doing nothing for long, so most of the FGW fleet have probably had theirs split and dumped the coolant by now (unless it was drained beforehand).

It should be out on it's way back to Ely by now working this:

I'm currently on a southbound 225 and have just passed Tyne Yard. I see that the East Midlands Trains power cars and LNER liveried Mk.3 set are sat there. Any ideas when they're likely to depart for scrap? Or are they still bound for Newport Docks? They must've been there at least a month now.

All going to plan, it should be happening on Thursday. Now scheduled for 57312 + Barriers + NL65 (No Power Cars, Just the trailers).
