I stayed at Reading Novotel last weekend. Last minute booking. Got an executive room very cheaply. Excellent hotel. 90 seconds walk from the station

Which websites do Rail Forum travellers use when looking for rooms now that laterooms.com is off line

I tend to use booking.com, easy enough to bring up a map view to look at places near stations.

After all there is no point saving money and ending up in a hotel on the outskirts of town requiring a taxi or a mile+ walk

Wellington Tavern Bed and Breakfast, Dewsbury

Located around a five minute walk from the station, friendly staff and a good breakfast. Only downside is my room was a bit warm so I needed to have the window open allowing the noise of a clock on a townhall bonging the time overnight.

Certainly one I will use again if I need to stay overnight in West Yorkshire

Another place well worth considering in West Yorkshire is Bradford Central Premier Inn. Very close to Interchange Station and less than 10 minutes walk from Forster Square. One of he better Premier Inns I have stayed in with larger than usual room and also one of their lowest priced. Less than half the price of similar hotels in Leeds.

I tend to use the Ibis Budget in Bradford as I've had some good deals there in the past, but they wanted something silly like £38 for last Saturday night (and that was looking 2-3 months ago), and in all fairness that hotel can be very hit & miss if you get lucky to get given a room on the carpark side as it overlooks a busy road with traffic lights, and end up in a room facing the road and you get the sound of road racers throughout the night.

Normally I find Premier Inns quite expensive for Saturday nights and they do tend to suffer from city centre drunks crashing through the doors in the early hours once the pubs/clubs close up.

Is anyone able to suggest good accommodation close to a direct link (rail or tube) to Vauxhall?

I am going to an international cricket match next September. We usually stay at the Vauxhall Travelodge as it's decent and usually reasonably priced. This time though it will cost £672 for two rooms for two nights! It seems that all of central London is equally or more expensive. Thus I am thinking maybe there is a cheaper alternative say 30-45 mins travel from Vauxhall station. I don't really know where the trains from Vauxhall go to so don't really know where to start looking. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would be glad to hear of them.

Vauxhall is easy to get to from a lot of places without direct trains. Eg Stratford is about 30 minutes away with 1 change from the Central Line to the Victoria line, 2 rooms for 4 people for 2 nights can be had 1st-3rd September in the Travelodge for £230. Whereas Vauxhall is £500 for the same dates.

I always look for somewhere on a dirext train 30-45 mins out seem to become a reasonable price if that is suitable for you to look at

You have network rail as well as UndergrounD @ Vauxhall, direct for Kingston Richmond HAmpton Court Or one change that gets you to Clapham Junction from where you get most of south west London, Windsor, Twickenham, or the Brighton Line, Croydon Redhill Gatwick

It is possible you are booking to far in advance and discounts have not set inn, I would book a back up on a refundable deal then watch the market, my London experiences say stick to mid price chains, even they might need a bit of a refurb but be sure the budget independents will be worse. Acor have a few eg Ibis Blackfriara or the Days @ Lambeth both 3* so you might get awat under 500 and walk /cab / bus rather than train going with commuters both ways

I’ve stayed at Vauxhall Travelodge at least once a year since it opened. A nice Travelodge especially with the super rooms. Until this year it has always been very reasonably priced for London but it doesn’t seem to be any longer. I didn’t stay here this year because of very large price rises recently. Having said that, September is a long way off, and the cheaper prices may not have been released yet.

A real good alternative is the new Premier Inn at Clapham which often has very low prices. It’s actually more Wandsworth than Clapham with a bus stop outside with buses every few minutes to Vauxhall. No more than 10 minutes on the bus to Vauxhall Bus Station. The Croydon Central Travelodge can be very cheap but is not such a nice hotel.

There's a Travelodge here in Epsom right next to the station and that's about 30 minutes from Vauxhall.

There's also one which is either a Travelodge or a Premier inn - can't remember which - right next door to Tolworth station, which is about 25 minutes from Vauxhall.

Travelodge I believe, I was going to stay there a few months ago but the next morning the price had increased (ended up in the Heathrow Central Travelodge).

------------

Travelodge, Romford (The Quadrant)

This was a late booking due to the SWR strike timetable and was quite reasonable priced (£25 a week in advance). The hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from Romford station, seems to be above a shopping centre. Standard Travelodge rooms, but my one had AC [although it was locked into heating mode]. Certainly one I will be adding to my list of potential Travelodges to stay overnight as it has some early trains into London

Thank you everyone for your replies! I did wonder if it was a bit far in advance to be booking a hotel, even in central London. I've stayed in various Travelodges around the city and the only one which was even slightly "dingy" was Marylebone, but that was a year ago and it may have changed. Even if it hasn't it was still fine, just not as polished as the refurbished places.

The match is on the 15th September so we were looking for accommodation for 14th-16th. It's a day/night game so no morning travel with commuters but ideally not too much travel at the end of the match as it may end at around 2130.

I'm sure Kite159 will back me up here, as a regular guest, but easyHotel Croydon is actually pretty decent. I hadn't stayed for quite some time until last month, the rooms have been undergoing a refresh which was nice. This hotel had ultra-comfortable beds when I used to stay regularly, but they seem to have been replaced with firmer matresses now. Pillows and quilt were still very good though!

It really is only a few minutes walk from East Croydon station, indeed there's more time spent waiting at traffic lights to cross the road than there is actually walking!

I would recommend it as an option, if the price is right. Whereas easyHotel Victoria, yeah it was OK but I didn't rate my stay too highly. Also much longer to walk to from Victoria LU than it appears, indeed it's a little quicker to walk there from Pimlico LU! Oh and I do not recommend easyHotel Earls Court, just say no to it!

The Easy Hotel in Croydon is a good place to use for a "bed for the night", and is within a couple minutes of the station [more time spent waiting for traffic lights and trams to pass].

I had a look when passing Tolworth yesterday; it's a Premier Inn.

Easy Hotel, Liverpool

Located around a 10 minute walk from Lime Street (but I would say less than two minutes from James Street) so ideally located for a late arrival or early departure.

I had a windowless room on the 1st floor, located near the stairs. The room had a foyer area (although the light was on permanently, could have been better on a sensor). Standard easyhotel room, no frills, but a lot of USB/plug sockets. No real grumbles from me as I will probably use again if the price is right.

easyHotel Heathrow

Yes, a rare post on this thread from me! o_O

Not quite ready to go yet, but before I finish getting ready to head back to Heathrow here's an ultra quick summary of my stay:

It's in a nice quiet area, much closer to Hayes & Harlington than Heathrow really. I stayed in a windowless room, and I'm guessing it's a quiet time of year here anyway but there was no noise outside to cause disruptions which is always a concern at the Croydon easyHotel.

The bed is nice and comfy, it's about as comfy as my bed at home so that's a huge plus. The bedding is really comfy too, I want to take this bedding home with me!

Excellent powerful shower and it may not be huge but the bathroom is just what you need. I'm not sure if the heater actually worked in the end, but I was plenty warm enough anyway.

Free WiFi that actually works really well, and there's a TV in this room (026 for the record) but I didn't bother watching it. I got here a little after 1430 yesterday and could have put the TV on, I had other stuff to do though.

Overall I really enjoyed my stay, glad I booked this short-notice and not stayed in that hostel in London after all! I'm back at this hotel late on Friday night, so it'll be interesting to compare and contrast a weekday night to a weekend night.

I really am a very long way behind on my accommodation reviews, I may have to start catching up next week!

How does easyhotel and Travelodge/Premier Inn compare in price.

I'd go for Premier Inn, unless easy hotel are significantly cheaper.
With Premier Inn you get a bigger room with a window and a comfortable bed.
Also worth a look on booking.com to see if there's a decent independent hotel that's reasonably cheap

I fully agree. In my experience Easyhotel isn't usually that much cheaper but the downgrade compared to Premier Inn is significant and not worth the cost imo. My Easyhotel experience was pretty nasty compared to pretty much every Premier Inn I've used and since then I've booked Premier Inn as far as possible, which is usually at a decent rate.

I suppose it depends really on the purpose and length of your stay. If it’s just for an overnight stay, where all you need is a clean comfortable bed close to the station, where you will be arriving late in the evening and departing early morning, a basic budget hotel or b&b at a cheap price is ok. That was certainly all I needed in the past.

These days, as I get a little older, I tend to set out a little later in the morning after a leisurely breakfast, and after a day out travelling and walking, I tend to return to my hotel room a little earlier in the evening and want to relax. I also these days tend not to move around so much with one night stays, but I base myself in a handy location and stay there for at between 3 and 7 nights. For this type of stay a Premier Inn or Holiday Inn Express is the minimum standard I would want. I find Travelodge too basic with so little storage space that I feel like someone homeless living out of a case. I like some drawers and shelf space to put my underpants and socks! I have found some of the Best Western hotels very comfortable in recent years. They might be a little dated but they are comfortable and have more character than the big hotel chains.

It’s always good to read here about cheap convenient places to stay but it would also be good to hear about some slightly more upmarket hotels to try close to railway stations.
I had a very good stay at the Best Western Station Hotel in Dumfries this summer. A lovely old hotel next to the station and local buses. The Hallmark Queen Hotel, opposite Chester Station was also a very good comfortable hotel to stay in last year. I have booked 5 nights at the Midland Hotel next to Forster Square Station in Bradford for next month.

The advantage Easyhotel/Travelodge/Premier Inn has over independent hotels is normally no hassle if you don't arrive until after 11pm (for example when I head to Manchester, normally using Stockport or Macclesfield Travelodge, coming off the 21:00 service from Euston. No point saving money using an indie hotel if you end up having to pay extra for late check-in or pay extra to arrive earlier.

Prices of Easy Hotels do vary, the website I find is complete rubbish so I tend to use booking.com to give me prices. Using Croydon for example, last Saturday I was in the Croydon Central Travelodge paying £25 for the night, IIRC the EasyHotel wanted £45 for a room. But for a place to just crash late in the day and head out early in the morning, then it's ideal.

Agreed with you there Kite, the chain hotels are ideal for late check-ins. Similar sort of thing for if your flight is due in at say gone 9pm at night, no point booking a hotel with a check-in that closes early evening so better to stick to a chain hotel which is used to dealing with people arriving late evening.

ChrisC, the most upmarket place I've stayed at recently was Corner Hotel, Kraków, Poland. Absolutely stunning hotel, more upmarket than my usual choice of hotel, but not much use to UK-based travellers! I'm expecting to do a full review of that soon, I'm so far behind on TripAdvisor I can't remember when I last logged in.

I have reviewed Corner Hotel fairly extensively in my recent World Frenzy trip report, along with plenty of photos.
