Reporting that all lines out of Manchester Piccadilly are currently blocked and the disruption is expected to continue until 10:15.

Anyone know the culprit?

Things shown as moving at 08:49 although clearly there are a number of trains waiting to depart (TRTS).

EDIT: National Rail now says Lines have reopened at Manchester Piccadilly following a broken down train near this station earlier today. Trains are now beginning to return to normal, however, may still be cancelled, delayed or revised whilst service recovers.

Sat down perfectly crossing Up Slow to Up Fast at Ardwick Junction, and sorry the title is wrong. The Eastern side was unaffected and neither was Victoria.

06:32 from Blackpool. Hmm why a pair though? Couldn't one push or pull the other to safety?
From the picture I captured and posted at 08:49, it looks as if that's what happened, and the units were able to reverse into platform 8.

Only by severing the electrical coupling between the two units then isolating (completely incapacitating) all brakes on the 'dud' unit, assuming you could actually tell which was the dud one, and assuming it wasn't a fault that affected them both. To then move the train you'd need another driver and would be restricted to maximum 5mph.

Far better to try to fault-find and then work round the problem by isolating whatever system is involved in the unit sitting down and refusing to budge. If this needs a full reset of all systems then so be it, that takes about ten minutes though. This is also all assuming it is a genuine fault and not 'user error' though.

My guess as to the fault would be a brake-related issue that threw up one or more TCMS alarms and caused an unsolicited brake application. Sometimes when the 26 hour brake test timing expires the units can throw up spurious brake faults as well as the alarm that warns that a brake test is overdue. Not that I am saying with any confidence that the brake test issue was the problem in this case, I've not heard from anyone what happened.

Passed it on the way into Manchester this morning. Sod's law it was 6 coaches (rather than 3 across points) and stopped in the most awkward place across Piccadilly.

I hear on the grapevine that an investigation has apparently revealed that the main cause of 2H02 sitting down was traced to be a hot beverage finding its way into somewhere it shouldn't.

uh-oh.

The train manager of the London to Manchester train that I was on apologised to us on the public address and went into detail about delay compensation arrangements, as we arrived around 40 minutes late as a result of the broken down train; they even took the trouble to point out that our compensation could be "up to £90" for passengers who had the full fare single for the whole journey at £180. :D

Looking at RTT this morning this will have been expensive as far as delays go.

It caused more chaos, but isn't as comical, as the jelly bean cancellation a few years ago.

Imagine the pressure of sitting there trying to figure out and rectify the fault, whilst your train is sprawled across the points blocking Manchester at morning rush hour.

What was the jelly bean cancellation?

Yep, especially if it's not a fault that you're trained to locate and rectify, I believe said beverage had been spilt in the back cab causing odd issues with the TCMS detecting spurious impulses from the master switch.

When the current franchise incumbent took over there was a 'goody bag' for staff containing a few bits of stuff - pen, maybe a keyring, some jelly beans in a little TOC branded tub.

A day or two later a 158 on its way from Leeds to Manchester Vic calls at Bradford Interchange where obviously the crew change ends. The driver gets to the now leading cab, puts his key in the desk but there's a bit of resistance, he pushes it a bit more but it won't go fully in so he can't switch the desk on. He takes his key out and has a look down inside and can see something fairly solid stuck and pressed in down the bottom of the receptacle. It turns out that the guard had been enjoying his company issue jelly beans on the way from Leeds to Bradford, one had escaped and rolled into the key switch (which on Northern 158s is flush with the surface of the desk).

Neither the driver or the guard had any implement to try to hook/scrape/coax the crushed solid remains of jelly bean out of the crevice where the bottom of the key needed to go, so they reported the circumstances to the signaller and TOC control and the train ended up having to be cancelled.

Northern aren't getting much luck atm!

A bit rich and unreasonable of the Avanti train manager to be subtly placing the blame/delay repay on Northern's shoulders there as well.

IMO bad design. Almost literally, things like cabs should be designed so they can be swilled out with a hosepipe.

If it's an Avanti service that's delayed their responsibility to pay delay repay to their passengers not Northerns. Northern will have to pay Avanti a fine for causing the delay but Avanti will get that regardless of if 1 or 200 people claim delay repay. Northern will not lose out by more passengers claiming delay repay off Avanti, Avanti will.

I know Avanti guards are told to advise passengers they may be elligable for delay repay. What they shouldn't do is mention any figures or tell anyone their claim will be successful that's not for them to decide. There may be people who are delayed 40 minutes getting to London but arrive at their final destinations less than 15 minutes late. Others may get there more than 2 hours late as a result of the original delay.

It certainly didn't affect all of Piccadilly, because I went into the station from Newport at around 10.15am and everything looked okay.

We were about ten minutes late, but that was mostly because we were about that amount late leaving Newport, and didn't make up the time. I didn't see any trace of a unit blocking the line, but to be honest I didn't know about it, so I wasn't looking for it.
