WholeFoods Markets in the USA makes it easy to eat sensibly and healthy. You have to pay for it though.

Didn't see one of those anywhere, or if I did it was way too far to get to by foot/Metro/whatever. And yeah, I should mentioned it's easier in the UK as it's also cheaper!

Not that my first food purchase in the UK today was all that healthy. Popped into Asda Hayes (West London) and got a loaf of bread, a packet of ham, a sausage roll off the rotiserie counter and a pack of choccy doughnuts. Not all consumed at once, some of that is being kept for the morning and for later.

Wow your in the States Tech, nice one, not been out there for over 20 years now, enjoy.

I was, yeah. I arrived home this morning, couldn't stop smiling on my way through Heathrow! I've got the first 3 days of the trip report on the blog, aiming to get Days 4-6 up later on

There's a fair bit of chatter in there too about the progress of my latest health improvement scheme, which I'm happy to report has been tested again despite putting a bloody huge tick next to one bit of already. Just one more bit to conquer before I move on to the next challenge.

All 6 days of LA are up at techsworldfrenzy.wordpress.com and Day 1 of Kraków is too. Main event of this bit of the trip tomorrow, then finish up some bits and bobs before the flight home on Friday evening. Train day on Saturday in London!

West Midland Day Rover. Saturday 18th January 2020.

A trip to the West Midlands for a change and another early start for the infamous 05.11 Cross Country Voyager direct to Birmingham New Street. I tried to enter the train at Manchester Piccadilly, but the gauge stood at the carriage door asking for the ticket before I boarded, I had my rucksack on, a coffee in one hand and my camera in the other and asked could I sit down first, she said no, so I had to unload everything and put my coffee on the floor while I got my ticket out to show her, risking dropping my wallet between the train and the platform and holding up everyone behind me, she said she was the train manager, but I feel she could have managed that a little better, I struggle bending down anyway as I`m not longer as agile as I once was. So much for mind the gap, I was stood over it. I`d arranged to meet up with Rob, who had been tram bashing in Nottingham on the Friday and was due to meet me around 08.30 on New Street Station as the class 20 rail tour was taking place and leaving New Street.

I`d drove into Manchester and on parking up realised I couldn’t find my phone, and presumed I`d left it in the house, so I had no way of contacting Rob. I managed for years without a smart phone, even travelling around Europe, and now I have one I find it difficult to manage without it, the same goes for the satnav, these new technologies are great, but at times I feel we are losing the will to think for ourselves. On the train down however, I met up with a couple of nice lads who were on the rail tour, one who I`d met before on the East Lancs, one of them kindly sent Rob a message via his Facebook page to tell him that I`d meet him at the Grand Central tram stop outside New Street station at 08.30.

I waited for Rob until 09.00, but he didn’t get the message until later, so we missed each other, in fact we missed each other all day, as our paths crossed numerous times, but we didn’t realise it at the time. My first move was a class 323 up to Walsall to see if any freight was around, although without real time trains it was difficult and no one else was on the platforms to ask, so I returned as far as Bescot, no sooner had my train pulled out of Walsall platforms than a class 66 heading north passed us.

I alighted at Bescot as I`d seen a class 60, and around four class 66`s and two shunters in the yard, I walked down the side of the river, but the sun could have been better placed and all I could really see was the two shunters. Returning to Birmingham New Street I sampled the new tram line Westside extension to Centenary Square, catching the tram up there and walking back to Grand Central for some photographs. The network is now developing again, with many more projects in the planning, exciting times.

My next move was to walk over to Birmingham Moor Street station and catch a class 172 down to Stourbridge Junction as I wanted to photograph the new liveried class 139 Perry Movers. Three Chiltern Cats were parked with their rakes in the yard. I caught the class 139 down to Stourbridge Town and went into the centre for lunch, a lovely chicken and chips in a high street café filed me up, before I returned to Stourbridge Town station and the class 139 back up to the Junction.

I`d actually woken up before the alarm went off that morning at 02.30, and didn’t manage to get back to sleep, so was feeling a little tired by that time, so I boarded a class 172 and decided to just see where it took me so I could grab a catnip on the train, it ended up at Whitlock’s End and then returned to Birmingham Moor Street, which by that time I was ready to face the world again.

I alighted at Moor Street and walked back over to New Street and then caught a class 323 out to Litchfield Town station and then another service onto Litchfield Trent Valley. Moving to the lower platforms I caught a London and Northwestern Railway class 350 to Rugeley Trent Valley, a great location for photting freight and probably worth a few hours on the platforms when time permits.

However, I returned to Birmingham New Street on another London Midland class 350, I seem to remember West Midland class 323`s working this route the last time I was there. On arrival at New Street, I decided to revisit the tram extension for some final photographs as it was that period were the day meets the night, so I had another ride up to Centenary Square and walked back to Grand Central again.

Back on Birmingham New Street and I remembered Rob had booked an advanced ticket to get back to Manchester, as he was supposed to be staying at my house that night, but I couldn’t remember which train he said he`d booked on, I knew it was either the 18.25 or the 18.58, so after having a look around the station for him, I decided to board the 18.25 and went up and down the train looking for him, but he wasn’t on it, so I travelled back to Manchester and waited for the 18.58 to arrive but he wasn’t on that either. As it turned out he was allowed to catch an earlier train after speaking to the guard, and I only managed to speak to him once he had arrived home in Yorkshire.

As I arrived home, I was surprised to find my phone wasn’t in the kitchen where I thought I`d left it, nor was it anywhere to be seen in the house. I`m the worlds worst with phones, I`ve managed to lose two now in as many years, I rechecked the car and there it was on the floor of the passenger seat, phew!

Despite everything though it was still not a bad day, it’s good to get out and I satisfied my addiction to riding on trains again, many thanks for reading.

Irlam, Manchester. Sunday 19th January 2020.

I was put onto this station by a You tubing friend “Henry David Allum”, although I knew the railway station from my earliest travels over to Liverpool, I had no idea about the preservation work that had taken place. The station has been converted into a restaurant and museum for the town, they really have done a remarkable job and I would recommend a visit, even the old signal box has been renovated. In the station yard they have managed to save the last standing Peckett Locomotive from the Soap Works, and it stands proud in the car park complete with a Manchester Ship Canal waggon and Cooperative Wholesale Society Limited Margarine Works tanker, along with a small tipper waggon. Large poster board are fixed along the station bridge walls at street level depicting the history and railways that served the town, with lower quadrant signals displayed on the road into the station. Internally the station house has a unique railway orientation in its deco, part of which contains an artificial railway coach that customers can sit in and eat a meal. Definitely a must to visit.

Aside from missing your mate all day, it sounds like you had a good trip around the Midlands. With through services to/from London out of Rugeley Trent Valley these days (via Birmingham) it's almost all 350s on the Cannock route now. I'm informed there's a 323 turn on there some time, although I've forgotten what turn it's on.

That XC train manager sounds like she's had one too many dodgers on her train and took it out on you a bit there.

Yes it seems so, I do like the 323`s. Yes I expect they have had a few fare dodgers, probably best to check tickets on the platforms though really and not between the train and the platform edge on the step and then watch you struggling bending down to put your coffee on the floor, mind you they do a hard job, not one I`d like to do,

I've got to agree with you there, whenever I watch the cabin crew on a flight I do wonder how they manage it sometimes. There's so much to learn and memorise, and the hours just can't be fun. Nor can jetlag, jeepers I actually got it pretty bad this time and I was practically useless!

Agreed it would have been better to do so on the platform, and not right next to the door, for your ticket check. Fingers crossed they'll remember to bear such things in mind next time they go to do such a check.

323s, yes I do love my Starships. They don't sound as awesome as they used to though which is a shame. Before they all had their motors rewound they sounded fantastic. Oh and I didn't like the refurb done on a WMR 323 when I tried it recently. Those screens are really irritating, and the volume just way too low for the announcements!

I really do need a trip up to your neck of the woods again soon, maybe once the new Metrolink line opens. I still need to try a 195, and there's not many 150s left to get...

195`s and 331`s all over the place here now, still a few Pacers at Newton Heath but they are going fast of course. I checked out the new Metrolink extension at the Trafford Centre on sunday, I thought it was going to run into the centre, but it just stops outside and continues to the sport centre, it can`t be very far from opening now. Im not sure whats happening to the 323`s now, at first our Manchester ones were suppose to be going to the West Midlands, now I`m not sure though?

I've no idea on what's happening to the 323s either, I think the 319s are going first now? I can't keep track of what's going on, even though I'm browsing this forum almost every day.

Mind you it doesn't really help that I'm constantly planning my next big World Frenzy trip. The next one is short and takes another item off my Bucket List, but the final three items are going to take some serious effort. And they're proving much more expensive than I thought they would be, not to mention hardly any of the final bits of my Bucket List are getting done in the order they were originally intended.

But I'll cover that in more detail during the next World Frenzy trip report, due out in 2 months and 1 day's time!

No I get a bit confused with the state of play these days. Your world trips sound good Tech, I have Czech and Poland a week on Saturday and then Morocco in May so far

Oh nice, you're going to have a good time over there for sure, and I'm definitely looking forward to the read of that trip when it's done :D I'm not sure how long the offer's on for, but Żabka stores have a promotion on their hot drinks between 6am and 10am currently. 2,99zl for a small hot drink, and at this time of year that's definitely quite handy!

Morocco I've yet to find something that appeals to me, which applies to all of Africa to be fair.

A lot of the old French electrics, plus some GM machines in Morocco, so I want to catch up with those, I fly into Marrakech, so Ill do Agadir and Casablanca, so hoping to do all the main lines as far as Fez, beyond that to and down the Algerian border trains are very infrequent, but I should find enough to keep me going.

Sounds like you'll be well away, for sure. I've had a spin on the rails this afternoon for a change, two more GWR 800s in the book. Now we're getting more of the 5-car sets up here at the moment I'll have a chance to score stuff on my local line again!

That said, I got my new planespotting book today, and started by filling in the BA stuff. It occured to me that BA fly a fair bit into and out of Gatwick, which would probably explain why I still need so many of the short-haul craft. Cue the need to get down there ASAP!

Great Central Railway, Winter Steam Gala. Saturday 25th January 2020.

Id arranged to take my mate John down to the Great Central gala and to break the journey up, I`d booked the Victoria Bikers Pub, Coalville for the Friday night. I picked John up at 17.00, and we drove via the M6 and Stoke the A50 arriving at the pub just after 19.00, time for a pint and some television before retiring for an early night.

With the alarm set at 06.30, we were up and out for 07.30 and on the sheds at Loughborough for 08.00. After the shed visit we did Beeches Road bridge, Wilmington Court croft, Main Street bridge near Woodthorpe, Woodthorpe Village footbridge, and Kinchley Lane.

At Woodthorpe the road to the railway bridge has, we think, been illegally blocked and the bloke who I`m told owns the caravan park, as you come off the by-pass, has been putting traffic cones at the bottom of the road to try to prevent people parking, so I just removed these while I did some photting on the bridge, when I returned to my car the prat had blocked by car in with traffic cones and put a sarcastic note on my windscreen, so I removed all the cones and threw them over his gate, before driving off.

I believe other issues have occurred from one of the residents on the new housing estate which has been built at the side of the railway, this chap has apparently threatened some enthusiasts just for taking photographs from the bridge, and threatened to break one of the lads camera`s, despite this being a public footpath. He must have been aware of the railway before he bought the house and seems to pick on enthusiasts who look old, weak and are alone, I guess it’s only a matter of time before he picks on the wrong person and gets hurt.

The gala was the usual success, a fantastic job by the Great Central railway and great to see two Halls double heading up the line, along with the Ivatt and Riddles and indeed the two 5. Despite the dismal weather, Kinchley Lane was the busiest I`ve ever seen it and had I not had my ladders in the car I would have struggled getting a decent photograph of anything.

After a great day, we called in at Georges Chippy for the obligatory fish, chips and peas, supper before driving back up to North Manchester, it had been a good one.

Guest locomotives, K1 62005 and 4953 “Pitchford Hall”, North Eastern Railway autocar 3170, along with home fleet, 6990 "Witherslack Hall", 9F 92214 "Leicester City", Stanier 8F 48305, Stanier Black 5 45305, BR Standard 5 73156, BR Standard 2 78018, Ivatt Class 2 46521, and Fowler 3F 47406.

East Lancs Railway. Sunday 26th January 2020.

I took a drive up to Bury after the gym, I was inspired by some photographs of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Aspinall Class 23 0-6-0ST 51456 on Facebook, as it has been running in on test trains yesterday, but it wasn’t out on this day, so instead I took a ride up to Rawtenstall behind 50015 Valiant and back to Bury behind 2890 the hybrid, the 1896-built L&YR BR 52322, was on the Diner.

Manchester Victoria and Rochdale. Monday 27th January 2020.

In the gym for 06.00, no band practice today, so I thought I`d go chasing Pacers on the Calder Valley Line. They seem to be operating between Rochdale and Clitheroe at the moment, but how long for is anyone’s guess. I boarded one from Manchester Victoria to Rochdale, they are pairing them up with Sprinters.

On passing Collyhurst Sidings, I noticed 09009, the Sidings are used to transport spoil from the building industry to Roxby near Scunthorpe.
Newton Heath had 3 sets of Pacers parked outside the depot. From Rochdale I returned as far as Moston and waited half an hour unit the next Pacer, just missing a Biomass Yorkshire bound as I arrived. Regular CAF 195`s are now operating on the Calder Valley line.

Returning to Manchester Victoria I arrived at the magic midday period in time to photograph a class 60 085 on biomass and EWS liveried 66 015 on bins, plus a Transpennine Cat, Resolution heading for Scarborough. A real surprise however was my mate Rob stepping off a Pacer on his way over from Yorkshire, small world.

Seems weird to hear of people Pacer bashing in 2020 outside the South Wales Valleys!

I can only imagine the racket that 60 must have made! :D

Yes I need to revisit the Valleys before the pacers go down there, but yes the 60 sounded great, so did the 68 of course.

Oh naturally, 68s just sound incredible. I did a Pacer farewell trip with Kite159 some months back in the Valleys, with the expectation of course that they would be going soon. Which has yet to happen, so I might have to do another farewell trip on them, but I would need a good motivator to go to Cardiff. Not many of those, and it's an expensive trip on the trains, I mean for the money I can go to London and back...

Yes its a bit pricey from here too Cardiff, but I`ll see if I can get down before they go.
