A ride down the Cumbrian Coast line and back (or one way by WCML to reduce duration).

Run out to Appleby - enjoy the town and have a mooch at the old North Eastern - part hidden in a scrapyard.

Can't help be entertained that none of the things are in Carlisle. To be fair, I find it a nice city to spend a bit of time in, but there is a limited amount of touristy stuff to do in the city itself.

OK, the obvious answer: fester on the end of the platform at Citadel spotting and photting.

Carlisle is blessed with at least 4 really good scenic railway lines (I haven't managed to travel north yet),
so the only thing to do is run out and grab a bag of chips and a coffee and race back to the station
for the next delight.

In the city centre, there's the cathedral, a castle (can't remember offhand if it's National Trust or English Heritage ran), Tullie House (https://www.tulliehouse.co.uk/) although I've never been in there, the railway model shop (https://candmmodels.co.uk/).
I've used the chippy that's opposite the station entrance / exit a few times when I've been spotting there. There's a greasy spoon in the Market Hall and a chippy near there too.

If you like pubs it's worth seeking out some of the pubs built during the period of the State Management Scheme in Carlisle - helps one to understand how and why many pubs around the country came to be like they are now (and how they weren't pre 1914 era)

Bit of context here
https://historicengland.org.uk/rese...t-we-already-know/land/state-control-of-pubs/

some of those pubs have survived better than others, but good examples to be found in the town.

Are there any rail yards in Carlise
Kingmoor, about 2 miles north of the station. Best viewed by a return train trip to Gretna Green. But not very busy . You also pass the DRS loco depot just south of Kingmoor.

I think DRS still use some of one yard (Kingmoor?).
Last time I passed through I recall that various derelict yards around the city were still discernible - this was arriving from Appleby Direction, and leaving towards Workington.

There are only the two ‘yards’ in the Carlisle area, and as previously mentioned these are both just north of the station, first Kingmoor yard and then just beyond that New Yard.

I am unclear of the distinction between a ‘yard’ and ‘sidings’ but just south of the station is Upperby sidings which are quite extensive. In fact the whole area south of the station is a maze of smaller sidings and lines many only occasionally used these days. The unfortunately named Bog junction for instance has just two scheduled trains a week both freight both only running as required so quite a challenge if wanting a photo.
