Surely people go to Diesel Galas to relive the experiences of the 1970s and 80s? Wouldnt "being warm" be a modern rejection of that?

Indeed, I thought freezing stock was a faithful recreation of the nostalgic experience enthusiasts are searching for? You're in the north - If it's below freezing, you put yer big coat on.

Or even better, get in the Trackside bar at Bolton Street between "leaps" and get your beer jacket on. :p

In all seriousness though, yes the stock should be heated as far as I know.

.So now I'm curious. How is it heated?
Electric train heating (eth). A lot of preserved railway stock has had it removed but the ELR has retained it.

Yeah. The Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway use their railtour coaches for diesel events, as they're dual-heated (electric and steam), but the normal non-mainline set used for everything else is steam-only.

Oh, it will still be cold - with all of the windows wide open!

I'm aiming to be there on the Saturday, btw.

Steam heating is also available where loco can supply it ( I'm not sure if any can)

We went on the ELR on one of their Boxing Day mince pie specials. It was freezing, there was no train heating (at least not in our carriage).

One consolation, at least the windows weren't steamed up so we had a view.

How many preserved diesels actually have a working Steam Heat boiler now? I think I remember reading that 37025 does but I may be mistaken.

37025 does indeed have a working steam heat boiler. Quite a few members of the East Lancs' home fleet - The class 24 D5054, 37109, 'Hymek" D7076, D1041 'Western Prince" and all three class 40s - have steam heat boilers fitted but most have them isolated. I believe that the boilers on 40106 (Currently on the Severn Valley Railway and experiencing boiler faults) and 40135 are operational, but they're not listed as appearing at this gala.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway's 37248 and 47105 also have working steam heat boilers, though the latter is currently stopped for overhaul.

I was most grateful for 37248's boiler on the GWR last year. The coldest diesel day I've ever attended!

A couple of years ago I attended the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway's diesel loco gala - it was certainly an experience to travel in unheated carriages whilst there was a blizzard outside. If you haven't experienced that then you haven't lived!

I notice subsequent galas have been at hotter times of year! ;)

I’ve been to a couple of galas when 248’s been steaming and it’s a real treat (plus the loco itself is an absolute beast).

At the risk of going off topic, I remember the MNR Gala where it was a very cold Sunday, a shunter hauled dmu coach and no heating on the stock meant I finished by about half 2

Locos booked to work include a Class 14 and a Class 56, neither of which have any train heating. I would suggest taking gloves, insulated headwear, a scarf and a heavy coat.

They often run top and tail with something on the back that can provide ETH, or where a no-heat loco runs alone the stock will have been heated on its previous trip so should retain enough warmth

I can confirm I have been to the Lancs in winter with the 45, 50 and 33 working and all have provided good train heating.

I attended the ELR gala today, and the only rake of stock I considered to be cold was the shuttle set with the 50 this morning. I gather there was some sort of issue, but not sure if it was resolved later. All the other sets were fine, and one I would describe as being quite toasty!

unsolveable issue - steam heated rake with ETH loco
