And not even any good at what they do...

Perhaps they know it - hence the need to practice again and again :(

The vinyls on the carriages have been professionally designed which is more than what can be said for these subsequent, random adornments for want of a better word.

Given that LNR (or NR) seem to be able to pay for 2 security guards to hang around at the barrier line chatting to staff, sorry, patrol the fast lines and prevent suicides at most south WCML stations, surely TPE could afford a security guard or two to prevent this sort of thing?

There was a security guard present at Scarborough station. One of the trains was vandalised while waiting to enter the depot

On a different Scarborough topic:
The locals are complaining bitterly on local media about the noise from the new trains at the depot. Especially, in the early morning. One lady has appeared on BBC Look North in her dressing gown in her house in the early morning with the noise of the 68s in the background. She says she can only sleep between midnight and about 4am.
Having been to Scarborough from York and back yesterday, both directions with new trains, I have to say the locomotives are very noisy. I cannot remember 37s at Liverpool Street making such a din!
At Scarborough the loco was not shut down which was adversely commented on by the person next to me on the platform seat.

I would be inclined to agree. The railway in the UK needs to install and use shore supplies so dirty, polluting and noisy diesel engines are not used except when necessary to actually move the train.

I bet there was a lot more background noise around Liverpool Street than Scarborough at 4am though. Under the roof at York I’d still say a 37’s louder.

The problem’s probably at it’s worst at this time of year due to to any trees in between having dropped their leaves.

A few things to note about 68's, they are 3800hp, they provide a Electric Train Supply index of 96, which of each the coaches added up to much not exceed this number. When the ETS is switched off the RPM is much lower and thus lowers the noise, the issue with turning the ETS off is that most Mk5A systems rely on it. There is back up batteries availabile on the stock, however they are for crucial systems only, for example, lighting, heating. Toilets, HVAC etc do not function without it. The depot is fitted with a shore supply, however due to some illicit design detail (failure) it can only provide a supply to the coaches. It does not provide any 'pre-heat' to the engine. If the first train is due to depart the depot at 0510 then starting the loco at 0400 seems quiet sensible, (the noise maybe not) this giving the loco time to Pre Heat, lubricate and start cranking. The ETS then needs to be supplied to the stock before the train moves to check for any faults etc.
37's etc were much quieter. I have been stood at Man Vic next to a 66 on a liner and with a 68 next to it and the noise was considerably less on the 66.

As I remember, there is no "pre-heat" on 68's, only pre-lube and crank. Takes just a few minutes to start one up from cold, provided the batteries have enough charge..... The coaches have a 90 minute battery supply for the vital systems, so it should be possible to at least switch off the ETS during the 40 minute lay over at Scarborough, and 20 minutes at Lime Street, without detrimental effect. The bottom line is that, something will have to be done about the noise, it is completely unacceptable. Its not only the volume level, it is the type of noise, a low bass drone (reminiscent of the Class 55 'Deltics) which is very pervasive.

I made this from a week or so ago.
It's all Nova stuff, but it's mostly the 68/Mk5A sets.

Set TP10 was in platform 6 at Stafford at 5pm with 68030 "Black Douglas", on what I think was originally meant to be a Bletchley - Manchester International Depot working.

With all sets delivered and four passenger diagrams up and running I didn't realise such mileage accumulation runs were still ongoing.

I was on 1E37 earlier, Stalybridge to Huddersfield, first time on one. The 68's sound great going through the tunnels, but the coaches are a little bouncy and rattly. Did the same stretch on an 802 earlier in the day and that was riding a lot better.

I used to Live in Stamford Hill North London in the 70's and early morning / late night the sounds of Deltics could clearly be heard , not a loud sound but a drone that could penetrate concrete walls

I live 200m from the line in the middle of nowhere (where there is very little noise pollution) and can only hear them coming past in the evening, don’t even notice them during the day.
