Now that trains have stopped running the real work has started.
A sure sign of this is the appearance of Nigel's News the first issue is attached.

Work has now begun on North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) landmark Bridge 27. These works are the first in a series of scheduled vital repairs for the world-famous visitor attraction and popular movie location, as part of its Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey (YMJ) project.

Carrying the 180-year-old railway over the Eller Beck at Goathland Station, the 20-metre Bridge 27 is best recognised as the iconic track leading to Hogsmeade Station, where the young wizards embarked for Hogwarts in the first Harry Potter movie, The Philosopher’s Stone.

The 84 tonne, single span bridge is being constructed at Cleveland Bridge UK’s 27,000m2 factory in Darlington, which has the capacity to enable its engineers to undertake a full trial assembly of the structure. This ensures a more efficient final installation ...

Nice to see you're back to the major works - hope all goes well and the weather remains reasonable.

But wasn't it Goathland where Harry Potter and company disembarked for Hogwarts?

I get quite jealous of their winter shutdown. The KWVR run trains all winter and in that time we have a bridge renewal to do too.

Not quite as much time as you would think.
OK we are shut at the moment and resleepering for one is progressing.. but from the start you lose a day for post season stock movements, charter work and a number of other annoyances.
the possession then continues to next Thursday after which we get midweek possession working and reopening for Santa's / Train of lights etc.
It's only after New Year that the main possession comes in usually till half term running, but this year that has been cancelled for the bridge works and we can work till before Easter.

It's still a lot longer than we get. Although I accept your access and terrain is much more challenging.

For our bridge we will have a three week (we'll 19 days) possession with only part of the line open for traffic during the intermediate weekends. Every weekend before and after we have trains running along the whole line, so for preparation it we requires careful planning and very generous people with leave. While we have plenty of retired volunteers we also have plenty who work. Our midweek gang help out in the winter doing a lot of work during non running days midweek.

All good fun and wouldn't have it any other way.

I note that most other preserved railways run Santa Specials, however if the NYMR close entirely, does this mean that they miss out on a lucrative bit of income?

However, playing devil's advocate, I suppose that they are a fair way from centres of population (would you drive over the moors from Teesside on a dark winter's night?).

Thoughts?

The NYMR website says they're running Santa specials from Pickering and Grosmont. I guess the possession is just the relevant bridge area, although I'm not sure how they're going to eke out the promised 90 minutes ride from Grosmont back to Grosmont..

Currently the possession is in place for the various work sites on the NYMR.
This possession will be lifted before the weekend to enable the booked Train of Lights and Santa trains to run as planned.
Possession likely to be re instated for the mid week period next week.

Those side girders look in good condition, its a shame they can't be reused elsewhere.

I believe from past postings on the NYMR website that the removed girders were not in good condition, hence the need for their replacement with brand-new ones.

Just looking at those cranes, is this an example of a connection to the national network being a distinct advantage? Could cranes of a suitable size and capacity get access to the site by road?

Without a doubt it's a huge advantage.

With Network Rail and its numerous Contractors and sub contractors giving an increasingly strong but unpopular impression that materials for railway infrastructure works are only moved to and from sites by rail as a last resort, ( mostly now just new long welded rail, concrete sleepers, ballast and spoil), irrespective of the environmental and other negative impacts through often huge lorries using unsuitable local roads, it is heartening to see that not only were two RAil cranes used, but that the new bridge sections came by train from the Cleveland Bridge works,

Indeed I quite agree with Amlag. Bridge 27 started it's journey to Goathland at first from Cleveland Bridge by road to a yard on Teesside before being trans-shipped to a train for onward movement. Though in the past this arrangement has proven advantageous for the NYMR. In so much as one of the infrastructure contractor was looking for somewhere near Whitby to off load/re-rail their equipment. The Moors offered their New Bridge Pway yard, the contractor inquired as to the cost of using the Moors....... Zero cash wise, though the Moors did have some more "involved" Pway work that needed doing and the Contractors obliged, vectoring the job into their work on the Esk Valley.

No chance of any access for suitable cranes by road. 1 - 4 roads either way into Goathland, note the Coastliner buses only use one of the roads due to low bridge on the other.

The Road Rail excavator that was working on the site with its 2 trailers had to be delivered / collected to / from Newbridge yard at Pickering then run 14 miles to site on rail escorted by the 08 Shunter with PICOP and Crane Controller on board.
Newbridge is the only accessible suitable location to deliver anything of any size to the NYMR unless by rail up the Esk Valley.

One further point though.
As part of the Bridge 8 work at Trout Farm crossing a new turnout is being installed across the roadway.
This includes a Rubber Panel Rosehill crosssing.
I have never encountered suchs crossing in pointwork before, is this a fairly commonplace event now.
Used them plenty of times before in plain line but not in S+C.
