GA JourneyCheck currently shows 8 cancellations on the services that touch Ipswich :frown:
Reasons: 'train fault' and 'earlier broken down train'.
A(nother) spare unit outside of the Norwich blockade might have been helpful?

2W08 failed Stowmarket, ECS back to Ipswich C/sdgs. 2E74 failed Colchester, back on the shed, 1P12 failed Manningtree, but after 30 mins got going, only to fail at Bentley, and had to wait for the 37 to come a get it, now resides in disgrace in the Up Loop at Colchester, the 37 is on the Up Loop too, (after a RR) but not attached......just in case ! :)
Only so many spare units can be planned for !

Sorry if this has already been asked (there are now 191 pages on this thread!) but what’s the reason for the fans on the power unit running furiously immediately after switching to electric mode?

And absolutely no EMUs sitting in Colchester or Clacton CS could be used to substitute the Ingatestone to Diss diagram?

I don’t think Norwich drivers sign 321’s so unless it was an Ipswich or Liverpool Street driver they’d need a hauled set or a Bi-mode

755424 believed to be the culprit but appears the bi-mode facility not much use. Was it running under electric or diesel power and why didn't it switchover ? Another software problem ?

No, just a power issue with the diesel engines.

Cooling the engines down. They stop after a few minutes. I guess there's also oil pumps running until the turbo bearings are stopped and cool, and that oil will also cooling.

Firstly, I'm loving the 745s to LST; just need to work out where my favourite seat is going to be (I think all commuters seem to have a preference given the choice). But a question about the bimodes - I've seen several at Ipswich running on diesel under the wires ; whilst I get that this may make sense coming off the East Suffolk at East Suffolk junction, it make much less sense to me on the Cambridge services - and I'd have thought that it would have been sensible to shut them down and pan-up for essentially shore supply when laying-over at Ipswich station.

Grateful to know why I've got this one wrong!

We are advised to put them on AC mode if laying over more than 30mins. Please take into account there are several units that have pantographs isolated.

Yes, GA missed a publicity trick there (unlike them LOL). In the episode last night he was seen getting off a 755 at Attleborough.
He seemed very aware at Peterborough that he was getting on an 'Azuma' and that they were newly all over the 'East' Coast.
Enjoyed the visit to The Dog in a Doublet on the North Bank (the sluice not the Pub) haven't been in there (the Pub not the sluice) for nearly 50 years!

Yeah, i noticed this too, he didn't seem to care that he was one a brand new Stadler

Maybe he had been told not to big the Stadlers up less they overshadow the IET's which seems to be the governments train of choice at the moment and they don't want people to know that there might have been a better option :D

But loved the Azuma even explaining the origin of the name - didn't he travel on a GWR version the previous week ?

Quite a shame really, the 755 and by extention the 745 are lovely units, wish enthusiasts just give them more love instead of getting rose-colored glasses for the class 37 and mk2 combo or the 90+mk3+dvt set

Nothing worth getting rose tintered about in either of the latter for most day to day punters in comparison compared to the new order.

Personally, i'd much prefer getting on a 745 over a MK3 or a 755 over the MK2, but this is coming from a person who lives in Medway where all the trains are multiple units

Agree. As a traveller the new units are absolutely fabulous.
As a train nut, I like the LHCS "proper train". Couldn't give two hoots about the 15x and 170s.

most train nuts i talk too define a proper train as a steam locomotive or diesel pulling a long line of coaches and saying that Multiple units dont count as a proper train

I noticed that the bottom part of the units has been getting dirtier and dirtier ever since they were introduced. That might not be a desirable part of a train to put white or grey on?
A dark grey skirt on the bottom part; like on the 170, mkiii or 321 might have made sense

The Norwich - Yarmouth line is closed from the coming weekend for 2 weeks followed immediately by a similar closure on the Norwich - Lowestoft line. That should help unit availability!

Having been away for 3 weeks I was amazed to be on a de branded 156 on the Norwich to Great Yarmouth line last Friday 0809. I though that they had all gone.

The Lowestoft line is planned also to be closed at the same time as the Yarmouth but will not reopen for an extra week.

That will greatly reduce the 755 demand at Norwich. Lets hope that the GA breathing space will make for a reliable service at the end of this closure.

Indeed, last trains to Yarmouth on Friday, Possession at 0025 Saturday onwards, and last ones to Lowestoft on Sunday, Whitlingham to Lowestoft possession starts at 0400 Monday onwards.
Ipswich to Lowestoft will terminate / start at Beccles.

Lots to do mate. I hear Brundall & Cantley have been misbehaving whilst running in the background. Might have our friendly village crossing keepers around for a little longer.

Something about them not raising after the passage of trains. Might just be wishful thinking on their part. Going to be a shame to lose a friendly face but that's progress I guess.

........ Going to be a shame to lose a friendly face but that's progress I guess.
For the operational railway, progress very nearly always means a change to the lives of some of the people who work within it. An organisation with a lot of real estate can always take benefit from 'eyes and feet on the ground' rather than simply 'spies in the skies'. So yes in some respects it is a shame.
I read another forum thread entitled 'Trespass and Welfare Officers' and yes these 'new' staff can cover a lot of ground in a responsive way but can never never know that little bit of the railway where once a presence was taken for granted.

Just traveled from Yarmoutht Norwich in one and the first time I've really got to experience the acceleration. Very impressive. Only traveled in dark on that line previously.
Very smooth on the Yarmouth line too and quite despite being beside engine module.
Located the raised airline seat. Good legroom there so that's going to be my go to

One thing I noticed. In Norwich in leaving from the door closest to concourse, there was a very slight step up from the train to platform, do they adjust for platform height?

Also the brakes have a very distinctive noise when realising. Why is this?

What are the economics on this?
What is the minimum distance of wire would you need to make it worth panning up for Regen braking, idling, and accelerating away under electric? Would it ever be worth a few extra miles of wire, particularly to reduce diesel use in central Ipswich/Norwich?
